DUNEDIN CENTRE. MEETING OF DELEGATES. The first meeting of delegates to the Dunedin Bowling Centre for the season 1928-29 was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Saturday night. The retiring president (Mr D. M. Pastier) occupied the chair, and there were about 40 delegates present. REPORT ADOPTED. On the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Abel, the report of the retiring executive and the statement of receipts and expenditure were adopted. OFFICE-BEAERRS. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr R. H. Todd ; vice-president, Mr D. C. Cameron, jun. : hen. treasurer. Mr H. Rowley; executive—Messrs R. H. Pastier (St. Clair). J. D. Haigh (Taieri). B. W. Fell (Waikouaiti), J. Veitch (West Harbour). LEVY ON CLUBS. Mr J. Allan (Kaituna) moved:—“That the centre levy on members of clubs be increased by Is per member for the ensuing season.” Mr Allan said the proposal meant an addition from Is 6d to 2s 6d per member in the levy. At one stage last season the indications were that the centre would come out with a very big debit balance, and a recommendation had been adopted that the levy be increased. In the last year the centre had gone back, as the expenditure had exceeded the revenue by nearly £33. The expenses would have been very much heavier if the ladies had not come forward and relieved the centre of heavy expense in connection with the visit of the South Australian bowlers. The centre bad always depended on the Easter tournaWent to make a big profit in order to carry on the v ork. That was a wrong way to get finance. The tournament players should not be expected to make a profit for working expenses, and each player should contribute his share towards the expenses. He thought the entry fee for the singles at the tournament should be cut down from 7s 6d. He moved the motion on the general principle that the members of the clubs should provide the finance required by the centre. Although the centre had a credit balance of £lO 17s Sd at present there would he a debit balance before the new season was opened. Mr Cameron said he would second the motion provided that an addition was made to the effect that the extra revenue derived from the levy be kept quite apart from the ordinary revenue, and that an entertainment account be opened, so that every year the centre could show what the ordinary revenue had been and what the cost of entertaining had been. Mr Allan said he had no objection to Mr Cameron’s proposal. Mr Sunderland (Kaikorai) suggested that the levy should be on a graduated scale. He considered that if the motion were carried a heavier burden would be placed on some of the smaller clubs than they would be able to bear, and on oehalf of the Kaikorai Club he would : oppose the motion. Mr Nesbit (Balmacewan) said he understood that the tournament players were prepared to make up the amount individually. Mr Smith said the Mornington Club would probably take up the same attitude as Balmacewan. Mr Rowley said the Leith Club was in favour of the motion. Mr Ledlie (Anderson’s Bay) opposed the motion, and Mr Duncan (North-East Valley) supported it Mr Fastier asked why the responsibility for finding the finance to carry on the work should be put on the executive. The present levy covered only the secretary’s salary, and there were other expenses. He thought that the least the clubs could do was to assist the centre in this matter. Mr D. Scott (Caledonian) said he did not think that players should quibble about the payment of Is, even if they paid it out of their own pockets. Mr \V. Connor said he was in favour of the motion, but he thought that the Waikouaiti and Seacliff Clubs should be exempt from the levy, as they did not participate in the activities of tfie centre to any extent. The motion was carried. On the motion of Mr Connor the Waikouaiti and Seacliff Clubs were exempted from the payment of the levy. INTERCLUB MATCHES. When the question of the Saturday inter-club games came up for discussion a lengthy discussion took place. . Mr G. A. Nelson (Dunedin) moved that it be an instruction to the incoming executive that not more than 10 matches be played during the season. Mr Cameron expressed the hope that such a proposal would not be passed hastily. To the ordinary bowler, so far as the St. Kilcta Club was concerned, the Saturday games were the greatest attraction of the season. Mr Fastier said he was in favour of a drastic reduction, contending that the spirit of the game was subordinated to the competitive element. For many years the number of games played had been 11. Last year a programme of 14 matches had been drawn up, and 12 games had been played. Mr Worthington (Roslyn) opposed the motion. Mr Sunderland (Kaikorai) said he favoured each club mating every other club in the competition. An amendment, proposed by Mr W. F. Abel (Kaituna) that it be a recommendation to the executive that the number of Saturdays to be devoted to matches be reduced by two was carried. SYSTEM OF SCORING. On behalf of the Caiedonian Club Mr J. Abbott moved that the present system of scoring points in the Saturday competition bo rescinded, and that the system of two years ago be reverted to. The motion was rccondo by Mr Proctor. Mr Sunderland said he had an amendment which he thought would make the tho scheme perfect.—(Laughter.) His amendment was as follows: —“ That the system of awarding points in the intcrclub competition be based on wins by rinks instead of by section., as under, a club entering 18 rinks would score 1 point per ris"?*» for a win, maximum 18 points; 35 rinks, 1 1-5 points per win; 12 rinks, 14 points per win : 9 rinks, 2 points per win: 6 rinks, 3 points per »vin; 3 rinks. 9 points per win.” He contended that one point should be counted for a win for each rink. Mr Jacobsen ami Mr Nelson urged that the system which was in operation last year should be given a further trial. Mr Sunderland’s proposal was rejected, and it was decide! that Mr Allan’s system be retainer. FOUR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP. Matters in connection with the Fourrink Championship were left to the executive. CENTRE TOURNAMENT. It was decided that the centre tournament he held at Easter, as usual. CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. On the motion of Mr Connor, seconded Mr Wills, it was decided that the Sarapion of champions competition be »layed on the sudden-death principle. T Mr Cameron moved that the champion of champions competition and the final of the four-rink champion match

be played on different days.—This was agreed to. OVERSEAS CRICKET MATCHES. A motion that it be a recommendation to the executive that bowling matches he postponed on any Saturday on which overseas cricket teams are playing in Dunedin was carried. SUMMER-TIME. Mr Cameron moved ns follow? — “ That the Dunedin Bownng Centre regrets that the Summer Time Bill was not carried in Parliament, and that the Mayor be respectfully requested to convene a public meeting of all interested in summer-time to consider the question of taking some united action in regard to making summer-time apply to Dunedin and suburbs. - ’ The motion, which was seconded by Mr Abel, was carried. APPRECIATION. Complimentary reference was made to the services rendered to the centre during the year by the retiring president (Mr Pastier), the retiring members of the executive (Messrs W. T. Henaghan, J. M'Gregor, J. Tonkin, G. L. Scott, E. T. G. "Falconer, W. G. Love, G. R. Swift, and A. J. Sullivan), the secretary (Mr R. Hanning), and the press. MEETINGS OF EXECUTIVE. At a meeting of the executive, hold after the meeting of delegates, it was decided to hold meetings on the third Monday in each month.
