October 6. —Kurow Meeting. October 6, S. —Auckland Spring Meeting. October 11, 13. —Dunedin Spring Meeting. By Sentinel. Saturday morning at Wingatui was quite mild for this time of the year, and the inside grass track, which was at the services of trainers, provided good, sound going. In fact, the history of Wingatui cannot furnish a precedent when the going was so sound during the winter months as it is at the present time. The mild winter experienced up to date has provided local trainers with an unusual opportunity of getting their horses, particularly rising two-year-olds, with early engagements, well forward, arid if a spell of bad weather should come it will he the trainers own fault if they cannot afford to ease their charges up for a few days without any serious loss of racing condition. The luck of weather is of course a groat factor in getting horses into racing trim. The majority of horses trained at Wingatui have wintered very well, and seem unusually forward in condition if required to race at the early spring meetings. The Avondale Jockey Club will give TJ.SOOsovs in stakes next season. Craighmoro has built up a bit since he won at the Dunedin winter meeting. B H. Morris will have the mount on Panther in the Winter Cup. Papier may be given a race during the Grand National meeting. There seems to he a little doubt in the north whether Beau Cavalier will be amongst the field for this year's Grand National Steeplechase.

A two-year-old parade will be held at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting. Lochella is amongst the horses doing easy exercise at. Wingatui. The Acre gelding Broadfields. in work at Wingatui, seems to be a rather likely looking sort. Beau Cavalier was awarded 11.12 in the Caulfield Steeplechase and 10.12 in the Australian Hurdles, which is also decided at Caulfield. Black Duke has filled out pleasingly during the winter, and on appearance promises to be a better horse than ever next season. Dunedin owners arc represented in the Winter Cup by Town Bank, Overdrawn, Wayward, Rotor, Miss Winkie, Antrim Boy, and Royal Saxon. One of the unluckicst horses that ever ran in the Grand National Steeplechase was Waimai, who slipped and fell after landing over the last fence when he had the race won. Solferite put up a good gallop at Riccarton last week. He looked a better horse at Timaru than he did prior to winning the Winter Cup last year. Tembroney and the Thurnham gelding owned by Mr H. H. Fisher are going on well, but both look a bit light, and will require building up. Ctmiic Song, on the other hand, looks bright and lusty in condition. Dumblane has wintered well, and next season should be found repaying the patience exercised in waiting to make aim a racehorse. He has thickened and furnished, but still shows extravagance in action at the walk or slow pacing. All J. Ruttledge's team, with the exception of the Tractor filly who ranks as a sister to Pink Terrace, look in excellent health, carrying a good bloom in their coat and big robust condition. The filly has a cold, but otherwise looks very well. Pink Note is in fine health, and is building back to racing shape. Royal Saxon looks one of the most improved horses in training at Wingatui, and seems to have clone remarkably well since going into George Feilder’s stable. It is understood that a substantial price was refused for Royal Saxon a few days ago. A recent addition to G. Feilder’s stable is a chestnut gelding by Balboa, who sports four white stockings from coronet to knees and hocks. Battlement worked at Wingatui on Saturday morning, and seems to be doing satisfactorily in hie preparation. Loughrea and Scion were schooled over four flights of hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday morning, and ran their task in linin 18 2-ssec. Loughrea gave a pleasing exhibition, and seemed to be waiting on his companion. The Kilbroney gelding will probably see a short price when he is saddled for a race over the small sticks. Scion seems to be brighter and more buoyant than when he raced at the Dunedin winter meeting, and as a true stayer may get closer at the finish of the Grand National Hurdles than the same trainer’s Jack Symons did in his year. Loughrea was schooled over hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday, and he was scanned with a good deal of interest after his task. He walked soundly, and is apparently well forward in condition. As a hunter-hurdler Loughrea should be well worthy of note, as his form on the fiat made him one of the best. - It is understood that some of the nominators in the M‘Lean Stakes object to the proposed curtailment of distance. In other words, they are more prepared to study their own chance than the interests of the club. „,t. Dubious got through useful woik at Wingatui on Saturday morning and seems to lack nothing in the way of condition for future engagements. Pamplona did long slow work, and seems to be keepintr fairly sound. Overdrawn does not fill the eye as a welter-weight horse, but is m good shape at the present time. Putting up over weight seemed to make the margin between winning and losing at the Dunedin winter meeting. He meets Black Mint on 151 b bettor terms than in the Birtlidav Handicap. ... If clubs take advantage of the privilege of having four furlong races in the early part of the season his owner would nature 11 y feel inclined to resurrect Absurd. Paper Money’s value as a sire of early speed will no doubt also appeal to lr The new range of stabling occupied by J Feikler js provided with roomy boxes and up-to-date equipment. He has a team of seven in hand. Valves and Phastor got through gooa striding work on Saturday morning, ihey are both growing into big geldings that may require time to reach their best. Eulalie, Adour, and Siragleam_ have been sent north on a visit to Limond. Sunbeam was bred to the same sire last season. She produced Golden Armour to Lemhton. Adour is the dam of Soliform, Ophir, and Shalimar. Fulalie is a sister to Homage, the dam of the 2300-gumca yearling Honour, so that a foal by Limond will be a full relation in blood to him. . , Prior to the Dunedin winter meeting some little discussion took place about the advisability of shortening the distance attached to tlie Birthday Handicap. The subject was not mentioned at the annual meeting held last week. The fact that the shorter distance events filled much better than the Birthday Handicap makes the matter well worthy of consideration when planning out next season's programme. _ . The parngrupli in Saturdays notes in reference to S. G. Ware’s team being shifted to Timaru and carrying a suggestion as to how the Wingatui tracks could be improved and popularised with trainers has been wrongly interpreted as a statement that the training tracks are in a bad way at present. Nothing whatever was said about the present state ol the training tracks, which, thanks to an unprecedcntly mild winter, arc in excellent order. Only two Dunedin owners have _ succeeded jn winning the Grand National Steeplechase. Mr D. Christie won with Knterfeito in 1882 and Mr R. ActonAdams with Lochella in 1919, Otago can claim another in Phaetontis, who won for the late Mr St. John Buckley in 1906. This year Dunedin supplies three horses oul of the 13 acceptors. Dunedin has supplied two winners of the Grand National Hurdles in Stormont and General Ad-

vance. Away back in the dark ages Mr “ E. Kildare ” won the first race with Ixion in 1890. R. Kildare was the nom de course of the late Mr Ronald M'Master. The Wanganui Jockey Club experienced a of £SOO on the season, but this is £IOOO better than the previous year. The Trontham tracks at present are in better order for this time of the year than they hare been since the track was opened there in 1906. In consequence, trainers arc able to work their horses freely, and (says “Vedette”) all those engaged at Riccarton next month arc going along well. The youngsters in work for spring racing are also thriving. In the Australian Steeplechase, to be run at Caulfield next month, Beau Cavalier was awarded 11.12, those above him in the handicap being Clan Robert 12.7 and Pilclen 12.3. The Grand National winner (Namera) was not handicapped for flic Caulfield event, but. the runner up (Nyangay) was awarded 11.12, or the same as Beau Cavalier. In the Austrian Hurdle Race, which is run over the long journey of three miles and aquarter and 20 yards, Pildin 11.7, and Henare and Beau Cavalier 10.12 are the top weights. Longhands, the winner of the Victoria Grand National Hurdles, has 10,7. J, Scobie, who is regarded as a master of his craft, was criticised in Melbourne for not having given Clan Robert a run over the jumps before the Grand National Steeplechase, in which he finished fourth with the load of 12.12 on his back. The veteran is apparently of the opinion that a trainer does not know his business if he cannot win jumping races without public trials. He remarked that he “had landed five big events at Flominpton with maiden horses. In the old days wo could rely implicitly on track gallops and schooling lessons.” James Scobie has been associated with senue of the greatest of Australian jumpers- among them Ruby, Corytlms. and Blue Mountain--as rider and trainer. A promising sister to Free Advice is in work at Alexandra Park. Acceptances for first day of the Metropolitan trotting meeting arc duo on August 7. Forfeits are due to-day for the Ashburton Sapling Stakes. The American pacer Direct Tod is reported to be doing good work. Imprint, Marsheil Neil, and Lousiana are going on well in their preparation for the Addington winter meeting. Gold Jacket will probably be seen out in some of the short distance events at Addington. William the Great is reported to be lu excellent order for his engagements early next season. Sarella is doing good work. ’.I here is a rule at Addington that only horses with engagements at the August meeting are allowed to work on the track before 11 a.m. There are just about 20 horses in commission with records of 4.27 or better. Terence Dillon is reported to have wintered well, and may be expected to take an improved mark next season. C. S. Donald has a team of 18 horses in active training, and about a dozen more standing by for future use. The Auckland Trotting Cup will be for a 4.27 class next season. An Auckland writer states that the Auckland Trotting Chib is well on the way to become the premier club of the Dominion. Native Prince and Jewel Pointer arc shaping very well in their jiroparation for the Addington meeting. If it were not for the fact, says “Mascot,” that Golden Bubbles was by Great Audubon, she would be at a very short price the next time she goes to the races. She does her work in perfect style, but she gets bustled on race days. Along with Happy Rosa, she recently returned from Australia, where she did some racing under P. Riddle. The secretary of the Breeders and Owners’ Association has received advice from Mr J. R. M'Kenzic that a silver cup, presented by him to the leading trainer of 1028, has been shipped from Loudon, and will arrive at the end of the month. W. J. Tomkinson earned this honour during the season, having led in 26 winners. C. S. Donald was second with 20 wins, and M. B. Edwards third with one less. The crack Gisborne trotter Peterwah will be in attendance next month (states “ Abaydos,” in the Auckland Sun). The son of Etawah raced well in the heavy going at Alexandra Park in June, but in all his racing he has shown a preference for Addington. RICCARTON TRACK NOTES. (Special to Daily Times.) . CHRISTCHURCH, July 28. The conditions were pleasant at Riccarton for training operations this morning, and in view of the near approach of the Hunt meeting the work provided a good deal of interest, though not many of the gallops were particularly fast. First Sight commenced proceedings by reeling off six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssec, which was easily the best effort of the morning. The big Gay Lad gelding is in capital order, and he will be hard to beat in early engagements. Childsplay sprinted half a mile in fair time without being unduly hustled. Fair Exchange covered five furlongs in Imin 3sec, and did it well. Rotor and Sarnia took 51sec for half a mile, finishing together. Hurly Burly accompanied Full Feather over five furlongs, which they ran at a smart pace. Paper Boy and Noteworthy were on terms at the end of a good gallop over five furlongs. Lancer boat Greyfinch over six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec. The Viscount had Corsetierer as a mate for the last five or sia» furlongs run at a useful pace. Philippic was given a useful sprint over half a mile. Broadmoor and Swoopalong were associated over five furlongs run in fair time. Hoylake and Bolero were well matched in a five furlongs spin which occupied Imin 3 4-seec. Pink Rose and Page Boy took Imin 20sec to run six furlongs. Beau Cavalier, with R. M'Seveney as a pilot, was under a strong pull all through his work, which comprised six furlongs in Imin 28sec. Count Cavour was allowed to stride along over about five furlongs. He is coming along nicely. Scrambler occupied Imin 4scc to cover five furlongs. Don Jose cleared out from Crossbow over the last part of a six-furlong spin which he ran in Imin 18sec. Battle Colours was given a three-fur-long sprint, in which he hit out freely. Tarleton finished throe lengths in front of Wreath of Myrtle at the end of a mile, which was left behind in Imin 46 2-Ssec. Quarterdeck had , Prickles as a mate over tile last five of six furlongs run in fair time. They finished together. Mime sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Zeuxis and Nine of Spades were on terms at the end of six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec. Gold Mint had a slight advantage over BcauGestc at the end of six furlongs, the last five taking Imin 5 2-sscc. Honeycomb and Merivale gqlloped nearly five furlongs, taking 51 3-ssce for the last half-mile. Nincompoop was going easily alongside Amor at the end of six furlongs, which occupied Imin 18 2-ssec. Solfcrite and Mai mscy were responsible for six furlongs in Imin 16 2-ssec —a smart gallop. Maunga (M'Seveney) and Hyperion (I. Tilson) were associated in a school over eight .of the steeplechase fences. They kept together all the way, going at a sound pace. Hyperion on the outside ran down several of the fences, and almost pushed Maunga off at the fence near the mile post, hut both horses jumped well up to the last fence, the second of the stand double, where Maunga ran off, while Hyperion dropped his rider and fell

over the fence. Tilson suffered some damage to his face. Up to this mishap it was an interesting piece of work. Faloose (Blair) was schooled alone over four fences and jumped them well at a slow pace. Diana’s Lad was given a useful gallop over sis furlongs, a journey which Buoyant and Lytup covered in Imin 19 2-ssec. Martarma and Tuahine were going well at the end of six furlongs run in Imin 17 2-sscc.

Rapier and Claymore wci;c companions in a working gallop over six furlongs._ Watevlow and Royal Land covered six furlongs together in Imin 19sec. Master Garland (J. Pickett) gave a safe display in a school over six steephl- - Leslie and Red Heckle galloped half a mile, but they were going easily. Beaming and Proud Knight sprinted three furlongs in 39sec. GISBORNE RACING CLUB. OTHON WINS CHIEF EVENT. i Per United Pbess Association.) GISBORNE, July 28.
