GENERAL NEWS.
Ihe versatility of Kipling was well brought out at a meeting of the St. Andrew s Literary and Debating Club on Friday evening, when members read and criticised selections from his works. A sketch of the author’s life was followed by the “ Recessional*” * An Unsavoury Interlude ” (from “ Stalky. and Co."), The Last Chantey/' a story from " Plain Tales and “How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin" (from the “Just so Stories”). A vote of thanks to Miss Ewing, the organiser of the programme, concluded an enjoyable evening. The programme of the Workers’ Educational Association drama class for Saturday evening was a gramophone recital, the second of the series arranged by Mr Macdonald, and entitled “Some Contemporary Artists.” The lecturer explained that he did not claim the title of the world’s greatest artiste for any of the performers whose recordings would be given that evening. Numerous performers have claimed that title, which, after all, was only a matter of opinion. Mr Macdonald then sketched in a brief but interesting manner the lives and works of some of the best-known figures in the musical world and played the gramophone records made by each artist. The talent included such wellknown poeple as Landon Ronald, Madame Kirkby Lunn, Kreisler, Joseph Hislop, Paderewski, John M'Cormack, and others. Tw'o of the gems of the evening were a ’cello solo by Pablo Cassalla and a selection by the Cassalls Trio. A recording of “ Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes,” by Lawrence Tibbett, a baritone with a magnificent voice, was also singled out for special recognition by the audience. A vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer.
