FOUND AT FOOT OF CLIFF. WOMAN’S BATTERED BODY. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, July 2. A woman’s battered and lifeless body was found at the foot of a cliff at Little Coogee. The police arc of the opinion that there ha? been foul play. The woman was about 27 years of age. She was named Monica Holly, and lived with Augustus Killy in a rough hut nearby. He told the police that he believed sljc fell over the cliff, which is 70ft high, during the week-end. The police are investigating.—Australian Press Association. FEDERAL DEFICIT EXPECTED. FIRST IN FIVE YEARS. SYDNEY, July 2. The Federal deficit is likely to be £750,000. It is the first deficit since Dr Earle Page became Treasurer five years ago. The State deficit will be between £1,000,100 and £1,000,200, which is £400,000 less than Mr Bavin estimated some months ago. TWO SAFEBREAKERS CAUGHT. POST OFFICE BROKEN-INTO. SYDNEY, July 2. Two safebreakers were caught redhanded at the Post Office at Carupbedown suburb. Constable Fogarty and the night watchman heard a muffled explosion when the safe was being blown open. They burst into the building and at the point «f the revolver commanded the men to surrender. They were in the act of blowing open the strongroom door when they were arrested. Hundreds of letters were torn open and scattered on the floor.—Australian Press Association. THE BAIRNDALE MURDER. GORDON GRANTED A RETRIAL. MELBOURNE, July 1. A retrial has been granted George Gordon, who was found guilty of the murder of Mr and Mrs Clements, and who was sentenced to death.—Australian Press Association. George Gordon, aged 50, was convicted and sentenced to dealh for the murder of an elderly couple (storekeepers) near Bairndale on February 16 named Richard and Catherine Clements. The pair were foully murdered during the night, their heads being battered. Gordon lived in the neighbourhood. His clothes were bloodstained, and his finger-prints were «n a chest of drawer?, giving the chief •lues to his arrest and conviction. Gordefence wu an alibi.
