THE ARCTIC CASTAWAYS
A TERRIBLE PLIGHT. MAY BE CARRIED TO SEA. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, July 1. In consequence of the news that the ioe floe on which General Nobile’s party is marooned is drifting and in danger of being swept to the open sea, the Finnish airman Sarke has gone to the rescue, taking “ spares ” for repairs to Lundberg’s machine.—Australian Press Association. OPINION OF ARCTIC EXPERTS. NO HOPE FOR CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN. COPENHAGEN, July 1. The Danish explorer Peter Freuchen declared that General Nobile was inexperienced and was not the man for the task. He was warned not to go, and has been morally and technically defeated. Freuchen deprecates the risk of valuable lives in searching for the expedition, which was doomed to failure from its planning. Helmer Hansen, who was associated with Captain Amundsen in the Antarctic, is of the opinion that his chief has perished, as the machine would sink quickly if it came down in the sea. Captain Amundsen always hoped for a quick death. Other Arctic experts are of the opinion that there is no hope for Captain Amundsen.—Australian Press Association.
