A TRIAL SHIPMENT. ‘ (From Oub Own Correspondent.) LONDON, January 25. Early in November there arrived from New Zealand by the s.s. Port Melbourne four cases of tobacco grown in the Nelson district. It was consigned by Messrs Buxton and Co., on behalf of the Nelson Tobacco Growers’ Association, to the High Commissioner, who was requested by the Government to consult the Imperial Economic Committee on the subject before proceeding to sell the consignment. In connection with the sale the question of moisture is a very important one, and with a view to checking this and of getting an idea ns to tho nicotine contents and the smoking qualities, samples were submitted to the Imperial Institute for analysis and report. Matters are now so far forward that an important, firm of tobacco brokers are ar ranging a sale, Tho same brokers arc also to be commended for the assistance they gave the High Commissioner’s depart meiit in the early stages by furnishing full information and samples of various grades of leaf far tho guidance of the growers Tho brokers have also arranged for tho buyers to furnish, as soon as they have them, tho particulars of trying out tho tobacco, so that irrespective of price, a good deal of valuable information should be obtained which will bo of assistance to the growers. One thing seems to bo apparent; the Now Zealand produce is pipe tobacco, and would have to be used in a blending pro ccsa.
