OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN D. HANNING. The death occurred in Dunedin on Wednesday of one of the most familiar figuies in coastal shipping circles in the person of Captain Douglas Hanning, at the age of 74 years. The deceased, who was well known from Wellington to Bluff, was recognised as a very capable master mariner. Ho came to New Zealand when a young man, and had command _of trading schooners on the coast at various periods. He traded with these vessels to Gatlin’s River and Waikawa. In later years he had charge of the coastal steamers Invercargill, Rakuira, and then the Kotare. During the past two or three years Captain Hanning had spent most of his time about Otago Harbour. He had charge of the Harbour Board’s small steamer Otakou. He subsequently left the board’s service, and was engaged in the fishng business’ for some time, having charge of the trawler Express. The deceased had an exceptionally good knowledge of the coast of the South Island, and during the most active period of his career was often engaged to make coastal voyages as an officer Captain Hanning resided at Portobello.' MR J. P. HJORRING. The death was announced at Lcvuka last month of Mr J. P. Hjorring, aged 57 years. The deceased was born in Central Otago. He was the eldest son of Mr N. P. Hjorring, late of Nasehy, and was educated at Naseby and at the Otago Boys’ High School. He went to °Fiji at the age ■of 21, and and entered the firm of R. Bentley and Co. After several changes eventually the firm became Morris Hodstrom, Ltd. Mr Hjorring was a director of the lastnarrjed firm. In 1918. with Mr J. H. Bailey, he founded the firm of Hjorring and Bariev, timber and builders’ merchants. He took a very active part in public affairs in Levuka, beint; mayor of Lcvuka. for some 10 years. deceased was a brother of Mr P. C. Hjorring, solicitor, of Oamaru. and a cousin of Deputy Superintendent Salmon of the City Fire Brigade.
