SOUTH OTAGO.
A POPULAR STATION MASTER (From Ottb Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February L. Mr W. G. Stewart, Balclutha’s popular station master, has received notice of his approaching transfer, although his destination has not yet been decided upon. The news will be received with expressions of regret from all sections of the community. It is a generally accepted fact that the district never had a more, efficient and obliging public servant than Mr Stewart, and he has done a great deal to advance the status of the Balclutha station during his term of office. When the railways were recently “ commercialised ” to the extent that officers were instructed to endeavour to cater more for the needs if the business and . farming communities, Mr Stewart’s methods were widely appreciated, and did a very great deal towards diverting business to the railways that might otherwise have gone by road. Farmers and stockmen generally were extremely well served in the matter of trucks, which were obtainable just when wanted and without any “ red tapeism.” Mr Stewart’s many friends can onlv hope that he will find a still wider field for his ability in the service when his transrer actually takes place. His suc4«ssor at Balclutha will be Mr Charles Pope, one time head clerk here, and for years past employed as a clerk in the goods department at Christchurch.
