Considerable interest is being taken in the rowing trial races between the four Otago clubs in the eight-oar boats for the purpose of selecting a crew to represent the province in the interprovincial championships, to be held on Wellington Harbour on March 24. If the weather is favourable the trials will be decided on the harbour this evening. One race will be between the Otago and North End crews, and the other between the Port Chalmers and Queen’s Drive crews. The final will be rowed between the winners of the heats. The race will start at the mile and a-half channel post and finish between the Rattray and Birch street wharves in the basin. Should the water bo too rough the race will be rowed to-morrow evening. The selectors, Messrs M. H. Priest and W. J. Wilson, have nominated the following oarsmen for indusion in the New Zealand eight-oar crew which it is proposed to send to the Olympic Games at Amsterdam this year:—F. Brough and C. M'Ara, of the Otago Rowing Club, and F. F. Wilson, of the Queen’s Drive boating Club. The .Dominion eight will be selected after the conclusion of the championship regatta, to be held at Wanganui on March 3, and the interprovincia] eightoared championships, to be rowed at Wellington on March 24. ACCIDENT TO FOUR-OAR. BOAT. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 29. An exciting incident occurred at the Hobson Bay gap in the new waterfront railway embankment when a light maiden crew from the St. George’s Rowing Club, consisting of Kelleway (stroke), J. Coote, C Authrean, and W. L. Carr (bow), was endeavouring to pass through it on the way to compete for the Nixon Cup at the Tamaki regatta. The boat swung through the gap at an angle and th© forward portion got past the supporting piles safely. The tide, which was running in at an angle, caught the stern of tlie boat, however, and carried it against an outer pile, smashing the rigger and overturning tn© light craft. The stern of the boat quickly filled with water, and this weight smashed the keel and the backbone. The crew were precipitated into the water, but they were all good swimmers, and after a slight struggle succeeded in climbing to safety on the piles: Before they left the water they also managed to make the boat secure with a piece of rope. Two of the oars floated away into the harbour but were subsequently recovered by a launch. The boat, which was worth between £9O and £IOO, was damaged beyond repair. While the club has its property insured, it ivill never, theless be a heavy loser.
