The weather was perfect, and the wicket was somewhat easier than it appeared. Oamaru won the toss, and elected to bat, and bad compiled the fair score of 177 when Granger secured the last wicket, bowling Paterson after he had scored 23 runs. Jones showed enterprise in batting, and was caught by Todd after making ?6 runs. Zimmerman, Uttley, Corson, ano Smith were at home on the wicket, and assisted materially. Albion, , before they got going, had lost five wickets for 15 runs when J. Granger and L. Brooker became associated, and a fine partnership ensued. Both batsmen completely mastered the bowling, despite frecpient cbr.ngos, and before being separated they passed the Oamaru total. Brooker was run out after making a very creditable stnn.. for 45 without giving a chance. Todd filled the vacancy, and played out time. Granger’s innings of 119 (not out) was an exceptionally good one. Brooker, although not scoring so fast, played a steady game. The following arc the scores:— OAMARU. Uttley, b Keith L. The Oamaru Defence Rifle Club fired the second match of the long-range aggregate on Saturday afternoon over 800yds and SOOyds ranges, 10 shots at each distance. Varying light and a pronounced mirage running across the targets made the shooting extremely difficult at times, with the result that a large number of misses were registered. Nevertheless some very good scores were made. N. M'Latchie won the match with 96, and G. Doran secured top score off the rifle with 89. Next Saturday the last match over 800yds and 900yds will be fired, concluding the championship series, and the winner of the championship belt will be found as well as the winner of the Nichols Cup and the long-range aggregate. The North Otago Centre matches were resumed on Saturday, when Meadowbank and Awamoa each met the combined Pukcuri-Hampden-Palmerston team at Hampden. The weather was fine, and the green was in excellent order. The visitors wore hospitably entertained, and at the conclusion of the games expressed their appreciation in an unmistakable manner. The following were the results of the matches :—• MEADOWBANK a. COMBINED. (Meadowbank names first.) Macrae, Hart, Atkinson . LAWN TENNIS.

The North Otago ladder has not been altered since the holidays, the only match played being one between Mollison and J. Familton, which the former won, 6—B, 6—l, 6—3. Neither player was at his best. Mollison ran to a lead of 4—l in the first set, but seemed to ease off, aim. Familton seeing the opportunity, stuck to it and took the first set. Mollison improved his game, and took the final two sets. At Awamoa T. Kennedy created a surprise by beating Reid, 9—7. He played a particularly careful game, his cutting off at the next being a good winner throughout. Kennedy has been one of the most consistent players Awamoa possesses, and fully deserved his win. He has challenged A. Wilson, and a good game should result. Reid had little difficulty in staving off a challenge from H. Familton, winning 9 —5. His driving was particularly powerful, but unfortunately he develops it at the expense of his backhand. Awamoa just started its club championship last week, as well as a mixed doubles handicap. Senior and junior championships are provided for both ladies and men. The only game played so far is W. Dnthie v. J. Henry, the former winning 6 —3, 6—4. J. Henry, along with his brothers, has shown a great improvement this season. He haa a very free style, and with a little more nr act ice will greatly improve his game. A well-known supporter of the club has just announced his intention of erecting volley hoard. This is to be erected in the most thorough manner, and will bo a great boon to players when completed. The Country Association’s tournament was a complete success. The weather conditions were ideal, and all the events v.-erc got off to schedule. The association is to be congratulated on the manner in which the tourney was conducted. The championship events were a little neg looted, country players appearing diffident about playing in these events; but they should remember that the only way to improve their game is to nlay with someone better than themselves. M'Kinnon w-as the outstanding player of the tourney, winning the handicap and championship singles and the mixed doubles, whilst Collins and Fearso wore successful in annexing the doubles handicap and championship. It is rather interesting to note that all these players took par*in the Oamaru tournament, the experience gained evidently standing .o them. It is to ’he hoped that more country players will follow their example next season. The animal representative match between North Otago and South Canterbury was played at Timaru on Saturday last, nd resulted in a win for the northerners by 14 sets to -10, although the games showed only a two-point margin in their favour. The result was very satisfactory from North Otago’s standpoint as South Canterbury had a very strong team in firs field. The standard of play was very good, and an enjoyable day’s lawn tennis resulted. In the men’s singles North Otago scored heavily, winning five out of the six games plav-ed. SATURDAY’S MATCHES.
