INFLAMED MEXICO

THE CHURCH AND THE STATE RENEWED CONFLICT INDICATED. (Frew Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) MEXICO CITY, January 28. (Received Jan. 29, at 5.5 pun.) Renewed conflict between tbe State and the Church in Mexico is indicated by insurrectionary activities in several States, and rigorous military precautions have been taken, while there have been wholesale arrests of Roman Catholics in the capital and other large cities. The Government charges the prisoners with having plotted against the State. The suggestion that President Calles and Archbishop Guadalajara should meet and seek a compromise has not yet been approved in either camp, and it is said that the hierarchy will hold out indefinitely in the hope that the Government will come to terms through force of public opinion. The Government, on the other hand, insists upon the acceptance of the laws, especially the registration of priests with the municipal authorities, which the Roman Catholics argue would give the control of the priesthood to the State.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
