AN AUSPICIOUS OPENING. MANY NATIONS REPRESENTED. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, January 26. Parliament was opened at 3 o’clock this afternoon with shovels. Sixteen inches of snow fell yesterday, followed by a sub-zero temperature. Greater pomp than ever marked the ceremony. Viscount Willingdon (Governor-general) read the speech from the Throne, with her Ladyship and narty on the left of the Throne. Many nations were represented by their consuls, and the first Minister from the United States was present. Mr Amery was a spectator. Mr Bennett, the new Tory leader, was in his place.—A. and N.Z. Cable. TRADE TREATIES. OTTAWA, January 26. The speech from the Throne indicated that trade treaties between Canada and “ certain foreign countries ” would be submitted to Parliament, and the question of Canadian Ministers or plenipotentiaries to be sent to Paris and Tokio. No reference, however, was made in the speech to the Australian treaty.—A. and N.Z. Cable. AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION. CUT RATE BUTTER PRICES. OTTAWA, January 26. An early debate on the Austrian treaty is expected, following an attack yesterday by the president of the dairymen of Manitoba, who said that large quantities of Australian butter at the winter price made Canadian competition difficult. The increased bounty enabled the Australian product to be delivered at Vancouver at a transportation cost of 36c per lb. The transportation cost to prams producers was 3c, and made com petition on a parity.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
