SOUTH CANTERBURY FISHING.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TBMUKA, January 27.

The Rangitata River has been in splendid fishing order of late. Trout-fishing has been going off somewhat, although a few fair catches are reported, but the salmon are now coming on, and are seen playing in the tidal waters. There is no report of many having been caught yet, though a number have been hooked. One fisherman recently lost a fine 20-ponnder off the gaff. But there should soon be some bettor reports concerning the salmon fishing. Better bags of brown trout have been caught in the Temuka River of late, and the Waihi has also been yielding some good catches.

The Opihi has been fishing fairly well, and some fishermen are reported to have secured up to 20 fish. On a recent morning one angler caught 22 with the dry fly. In tho lower pools of the Opihi the fish have been plentiful, and some fish up to 121 b weight have been caught on the fly and bait.

The Pareora has also been fishing much better lately, and some good baskets of fine fish are reported as having been caught there. Lake Ohau has been giving some fine fishing recently, and on one day two anglers caught 27 splendid rainbow trout, most of the fish being about 81b weight, the smallest 41b, and the largest 111 b. Those fish were secured at the r outh of one of the creeks at the top end of the lake. Some anglers trolling there have caught as many as 40 fish in a day. Although this is not good sportsmanship, it is a very successful means of securing good, bags f fish.

The fishing in Labe Alexandria has been only fair, and some anglers have been getting three fish of an evening—good brown trout from Sib to 1111 b, and rainbows from Sib to 91b in weight. The waters of the lake are now very warm, and the fish are mostly in the mouths of the streams. Some of the nicest brown trout to be seen are there, fish 27in long ranging up to 1111 b, and the rainbow’s are also in perfect order, weighing 101 b for fish 26in. The fish in the lakes now are mostly well-conditioned.
