Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Gup meeting are due on February 3. A payment is due on the same date for the Champagne Stakes. Mr G. J. Barton paid a flying visit to Trentham in order to be present at the bloodstock gales. He went to 650gns for the half-brother by Paper Money to Ark Royal. The Waimate Cup will carry a stake of 275sovs and includes a cup valued at 50sovs. Mr J. M. Samson bid up to 575gns for the Tea Tray—Taiamai colt, whom several regarded as one of the best yearlings sent under the hammer at the Trentham sales. Some of the Australian visitors were also amongst the bidders for the colt, but gave wav when the representative of Mr A. B. Williams, owner of Star Stranger, kept the bidding busy in a manner suggesting that “he’s mine.” , , , A. E. Ellis and T. Metcalf both intend to be on the scene during the Dunedin Cup meeting. , Booster knocked one of his joints when running in the Telegraph Handicap, and on that account was not started again at Trentham. , , The Hawk is now 1C years ola and has won over 21,000sovs in stakes. A. E Didham made a quick recovery from the effects of his fall on the first dav at Trentham, and was riding again on" tho final day of the meeting. The Otautau Jockey Club has lodged an objection to the Oamaru Jockey Club being allowed to race at Wingatui two days after the date of the southern meeting. Last season the Otautau Club held its meeting on May 25, whilst the Oamaru Club has for some time past held a meeting on March 23, the anniversary of Otago. An intolerable state of affairs has been noticed this season in connection with the unwarranted consideration bestowed on fractious horses at the post. In the south Jack o’ Lantern has become quite notorious, and in his last appearance kicked his rider, who luckily escaped with minor injuries. At Trentham. Joybird played up at the start of the Wellington Cup and kicked Ark Royal so viciously that it is very doubtful if his life can be saved, arid on the final day of the meeting Joybird was flinging her heels when walking around with the rest of the field, but nevertheless was not ordered out of the way. It is also noticeable that the moving start is occasionally brought into play with apparently the sole object of getting the fractious horses away on even terms with the rest of the field. Star Stranger, the winner of the Wellington Cup, was got by Martian from Star Lady, by Demosthenes —Lady Lucy, by Seaton Delaval —Hilda, by Musket from Ouida. This is one of the best staying pedigrees that can be found in the Stud Book. During the Perth Cup meeting a man was stationed in a position where he could see people who stood up during a race, and by speaking into a machine his voice was amplified through the loud speakers and everybody in the stand could hear his accusing tones as he told the lady in the green hat or the gentleman with the grey Trilby to sit down. Before the first race he asked everybody to remain seated so that everybody could see. It was also stated that those who disobeyed his orders would have their names taken by a policeman.
