He was also in command of their sailing ships Clan Grant, Clan Robertson, and Clan Mackenzie, in which he made many smart passages. Subsequently Captain Harris joined and was in command of several of the company s “ Queen ” steamers. -O’ WHITE STAR LINER LAURENTIC. The new White Star liner Laurentic, which made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York in November last year, is said to be one of the finest examples of the British shipbuilder’s art. Built primarily for the White Star Line’s Liverpool-Oanadian service, the Laurentic is making trips in the New York trade, following which she will be operated on two special cruises to the Mediterranean before taking her place next spring in the St. Lawrence trade. The Laurentic ja a product of HarJand and Wolff’s Belfast yards, and public rooms, passenger accommodation and spacious decks are ample evidence that the company has anticipated the wishes of the travelling public, and has built a vessel which it believes will meet with the approval of all. Excellent cabin, tourist third class and third clas s accommodations are provided for 1600 passengers. Each class has spacious promenade deck space. The public rooms for cabin passengers, comprising dining saloon, drawing room, smoking jroom. veranda cafe, gymnasium and children’s playroom have all been designed with" care in a variety of decorative styles. From the Louis Seize dining room, which will seat 310 passengers, one may pass either to the lounge, a reproduction of Italian Renaissance work, to a parquet floor for dancing, or to the Empire drawing room, or to the oak pannelled smoking room designed on Jacobean lines. The Laurentic is of 19.000 gross tons, and has a speed of 161 knots. The vessel Is propelled by three screws, each wing shaft being operated by a four-cylinder triple-expansion reciprocating engine, which exhausts to a low pressure turbine, directly coupled to the centre line of shafting. The low pressure turbine in turn exhausts to two condensers of the Weir regenerative type. The reciprocating engines and the turbine parts are specially balanced to eliminate vibration. Steam is supplied by four double-ended and four single-ended boilers burning coal under natural draught, and the steam is superheated before delivery to tbe engine. The Laurentic has two large funnels and two masts, and a flush forecastle, but has no bank of boats around the foremast, after the fashion now so general. Her boats are banked in two heights the whole length of the promenade deck and right aft. After the fashion of the White Star Line, the ship has a full width flying bridge over the charthouse. Only the forward end of -the long promenade deck Is glassed in.

The King Edwin was launched at Belfast on September 29, and her maiden voyage will be to Australia. “ King ” vessels often visit Australian ports, particularly during the wheat season, and it ig quite likely that this vessel will be chartered for wheat outwards.
