FEDERAL POLITICS.

ELECTION THIS YEAR. (From Ocb Own Correspondent.' SYDNEY, January 19. The consummation of the recent pact which ensured a united front by the Nationalist and Country Parties in the wider domain of Australian politics, ana the consolidation of their forces, is a reminder of the approach of the Federal elections. Although they are not to take place in the immediate future—probably not till towards the end of the year—the pact is a clear sign that the anti-Labour forces are not going to leave their organisation until the last minute. Nationalists do not make any secret of their feeling that the Federal Government needs strengthening, and that if it is returned to office there will have to be a few changes. Labour is being strongly warned that it must not be caught napping.
