Laui'ia, vicar of St. Cuthbert’s, Darwen, and parishioners over Anglo-Catholic practices led to police intervention one Sunday. Mr Seal, people’s warden, and Mr Moore, vice-chairman of the Parochial Council, interviewed the incumbent in the vestry concerning a refusal to convene a parochial meeting. Subsequently two police officers patrolling the vicinity were requested by the vicar to eject Mr Moore, who left and pinned a notice m the church porch convening a council meeting. Mr Moore told a correspondent that the vitnr refused a discussion, ami he (Mr Moore) left to avoid a breach of the peace. The dissenting parishioners, who filed out during the service, returned on learning; of the developments, one woman remarking : " There is one who prays for peace and calls for the police.” The rector and his wife were escorted to the vicarage, where Mr Lancia asked tha police to disperse the crowd.
