SUN SPOTS.
LARGE NUMBER VISIBLE. STORMS AND FLOODS PROBABLE. (Special to Daily I’imes.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 26. The well-known local astronomer (the Rev. B. Dudley, of Lyttelton) states: “ I examined the snn instrumcntally on Wednesday, and found it in a very abnormal physical condition. I counted about 15 spots, some of them exceptionally large. These are grouped in three main centres, and indicate that th‘e sun is in a very much disturbed state, which is likely to be reflected in more than ordinary magnetic agitation on the earth. This is in keeping with the well-known solar cycle, by which the sun is just now passing through a period of maximum spottedness. It is not unlikely, therefore, that the cables will inform us of further storms, floods, etc., in various parts of the world.”
