AN EXPRESS DERAILED.
REMARKABLE OCCURRENCE. The limited express, Melbourne to Sydney, was derailed near Uranqninty, New South Wales, last week. The remarkable discovery was made regarding the derailment that a goods train crossed the points earlier in the night with a piece of chain trailing from one of the trucks. The chain fouled the points, and portion of it became wedged in them, and strained them to such an extent that they did not close properly when set for the limited express to pass through. The engine of the express jumped the joints, but the tender and carriages ran on to the main line. The driver applied the brakes, which worked so effectively that the engine was stopped within twice its length. The derailment caused very little bumping. Very few of the passengers were awakened, and most of them were not aware of the accident until several hours later. The cause of the derailment is unique in railway history.
