A FLOATING ISLAND.
EFFECT OF VOLCANIC ACTION. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 25. “ They call it the ‘ floating island ’ for the reason that over a stretch of years it has popped up in different places,” said Mr J. D. Whitcombe, of Nukualofa, this morning in giving a few details of the volcanic Falcon Island, 45 miles distant from Nukualofa, which has been in unruly mood of late, clouds of white steam being visible for many miles on a clear day. Mr Whitcombe. said there had apparently been a controversy of late in connection with the existence of the island, but it was very much there, and was not. to be confounded with another volcanic island in the locality. When Falcon Island was thrown up from the sea bed in 1893 it was three miles in length and a mile wide, but of low height, and being composed mostly of ashes it washed away as the years w-ent on. It was now of considerable height as the result of volcanic action. A very interesting development had been the gradual formation of an ox. cellent harbour at the northern end.
