TRAPPED UNDER THE SEA.
JOURNALIST’S EXCITING EXPERIENCE. Mr Clarke Irvine, who is at present touring New Zealand with the only print of the famous Pillsbury slow-motion flower picture, “ The Birth of a Flower,” spent 11 years in picture production at Hollywood anrl in his capacity as publicity director for Goldwyn, Warner Bros., and other firms, he helped to stardom such artists as Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Bcbe Daniels, and Irene Rich. He directed pictures for Goldwyn’s Screen Snapshots, ' depicting lives of such stars as Geraldine Farrar, Will Rogers, Madge Kennedy, Jack Pickford, Mabel Normand, and Paul Frederick, while he has also directed many mob scenes and scenic pictures. Probably Mr Irvine’s most exciting ad venture was when he was trapped undersea at Catalina Island in 1921 while diving with a camera man in a diving bell in an effort to secure a story of feelings under water. “We had to remain below for six hours.” he remarked, “ until a broken hoist cable was repaired. Luckily the air lube was long enough and remained intact. I saw all T wanted to see, however, of under-sea life.”
