WOODEN DWELLING DAMAGED. A five-roomed wooden dwelling, No. 29 Millar street, North-East Valley, was badly damaged by a fire which broke out in the kitchen shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday, volumes of smoke issuing from the building drew the attention of neighbours, and the alarm was sent through to brigade headquarters by means of a street call box at 1.40 p.m. The new Leyland pump, manned by a, full crew, reached the scene a few minutes later. The fire then had a strong hold of the rear portion _ of the building, smoke and flames issuing from the roof and windows. With a line of hose throwing out a good volume of water, the firemen prevented the flames from spreading to tne front portion of the building, and the outbreak was quickly extinguished. The rear rooms, particularly tho kitchen, were badly damaged, and the contents of the kitchen destroyed. Some damage was done to the other rooms by the smoke and heat. The house is owned by Mr Howe, of Maitland street, and occupied by Mr J. Lyons and his family. The occupants were absent at the time of the outbreak, which was caused through the switch of an electric iron not being turned off. The current overheated the iron, and the woodwork was quickly set alight. The house is insured, but no particulars were available. There was no insurance on the contents.
