The German steamer Kerston Miles, en route from Port Arthur, Texas, with a full cargo of case oil, cleared Balboa on December 2 for Auckland, where she la due about December 30. The Union Company advises that the Manuka is timed to leave Melbourne tomorrow for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington. She is due at this port on January 3, and will sail from Wellington on January 7 for Melbourne. KARETU FROM SYDNEY. The Union Company's freighter Karetu left Sydney last Friday afternoon with a large shipment of general cargo for discharge at Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Oamaru. The vessel should arrive In the Lower Harbour this afternoon. COBINTHIC HOMEWARD BOUND. Cabled news received by the Shaw-Savill Company states that the liner Corinthic left Colon on December 20 for Southampton and London. , The vessel left Wellington on November 27. PORT CAROLINE LEAVES PANAMA. Cabled news received by the C. and D. Line reports that the Port Caroline, from Lcndon, cleared the Panama canal on December 20 for Lyttelton, where she is duo on January 12. The vessel will also discharge at Port Chalmers and Bluff. THE CITY OP WINCHESTER. The Shaw-Savill Company reports that the City of Winchester will now leave New Plymouth to-morrow for Timaru and Port Chalmers, to complete loading. The vessel is now scheduled to sail from Port Chalmers for London on January 3. '* NILE FROM TEXAS. The steamer Nile is reported to have reached Colon on December 18, en route from Galveston, Texas, to Auckland. The vessel is bringing a cargo of sulphur, of which 4250 tons will be unloaded at Auckland and the remainder at southern ports. She is due at Auckland about January 14. PASSENGERS BY BALLARAT. NEW MOTOR PASSENGER SHIP. The new motor passenger ship, ordered by the Adelaide S.S. Company for the interstate trade will be built by Beardmore and Co. Ltd., on the Clyde. She will have a length of 430 ft, beam of 60ft, and a moulded depth of 30ft to the upper deck. Accommodation will be provided for 300 first and second class passengers, a speed of 16 knots Is expected. There will be five decks. For the comfort and convenience of travellers a large number of single and double cabins will be included. In'these cabins cot bedsteads will be placed instead of the ordinary bunks. Other features will be music and smoke rooms on the promenade deck, with verandag adjoining. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. " „ . _ A Chatham Islands.—Tonganro, Kerstea Miles, Mahia. LARGE RUSSIAN TANKER. At 'the Andre Marti yard, Nicolajeff, a 10,600-ton motor tanker is being built for the Naptha Trust, of Moscow. She „ will be equipped with two Sulzer-type engines built in Germany. They will each be of 1400 b.h.p., having four cylinders 600 mm., with a piston stroke of 1060 mm., the speed being 110 r.X'.m. DIESEL ELECTRIC TANKERS. It is understood that the Atlantic Refining Oomnany may shortly place orders for throe largo’ tankera to be equipped with Diesel ’electric machinery and that the contracts will be given to British or Continental yards (states the Motor Ship). It will be remembered that these owners ordered a 12,500-ton Diesel electric tanker from Scott’s Shipbuilding and Engineering Company a short time ago and that this Is supplied with Carels-Ingersoll Rand oil engines, the electrical equipment being manufactured by the British Thomson Houston Company. PERSONAL ITEMS. Captain S. C. Warner, the popular commander of the P. and 0. R.M.S. Maloja, which arrived at Sydney on December 5, is to retire when the vessel reaches London. He has had an interesting career, and was through three war campaigns. Including the South African War and the Great War. The death is reported of Captain John George, 0.8. E., of the Union-Gastle Mail Steamship Company, Ltd., which took place suddenly. A very popular commander, he was 63 years of age, and had been In the company’s service since 1889, when he joined the steamer German as Wurth officer. In 1902 he was given command of the Harlech Castle, and after sailing in various intermediate steamers he was appointed to the command of the mail steamer, Norman, in 1920. His last ship was the Arundel Castle, which he joined last year. For very valuable services he rendered while commanding the hospital ship Gloucester Castle during the war he was awarded the 0.8. E. Captain H. Strong, R.D., R.N.R., commodore of the Union Castle Company’s fieeu, has passed into well-earned retirement after 48 years’ service at sea. After two years’ training in the Worcester, and other seafaring experience, during which he gained his mate’s certificate, he joined the Union Line in 1887 as fourth officer of the Tartar. From that ship he passed to the Moor, the Arab, the Trojan, the Mexican, and the Scot, until in 1899 he was given the command of the Gaika in the intermediate service His first mail command was the Carisbrooke Castle, and since then he has commanded the Saxon, the Armadale Castle, the Edinburgh Castle, the Windsor Castle, and, lastly, the Carnarvon Castle. Captain Strong is a Younger Brother of Trinity House,, a member of the Company of Master Mariners, and a member of the London Committee of the Missions to Seamen. He will be succeeded by Captain W. F. Stanley, of the Windsor Castle.
