HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.

HEAVY TRAIN AND TRAM LOADINGS. Due, probably, to the glorious weather which has been experienced over the holidays, traffic by train, tram, and bus has been exceptionally heavy. There has been a real holiday spirit abroad, and the railway and tramway authorities made ample provision for the safe carriage of travellers. , . On Monday the traffic on the Otago Central line was such that two outward trains carried about 300 travellers, while the principal main line trains were heavily loaded. The 8.40 a.m. mail train to Christchurch carried 350 persons, the 9.5 a.m. special to Christchurch the 11.34 a.m. north express 420, the 8.35 a.m. train to Gore 330, and the 9 a.m. train to Invercargill 350. The express which arrived from Christchurch at 4.45 p.m. brought 400, the 6.23 p.m. from Gore 200, and the 6.53 p.m. from Invercargill 180. Inward and outward traffic yesterday was also heavy. Two hundred and sixty passengers left by the morning express for the south, and the 8.40 and 11.34 a.m. trains for Christchurch carried complements of 320 and 460 respectively. The through express from the north was fully booked up on leaving Christchurch, and of its 500 passengers 340 were for Dunedin, the remainder going on south. The late express was also well patronised. The race trains had a particularly busy day, although fewer passengers went to Wingatui than on Monday. THE TRAMS. Loading on the trams was not particularly heavy during the holidays excepting on the St. Clair and St. Kilda lines, the cars on these routes being packed throughout the day. especially on Monday and yesterday. The observation tours by the buses were exceptionally well patronised, and the loading on these trips on Monday was the heaviest since the close of the Exhibition. The following table shows the receipts from the tram and bus traffic as compared with last year:— December— 1926. 1927. 23 £569 7 4 £5Bl 9 6 24 217 11 11 458 1 9 25 155 7 7 277 0 10 26 330 6 3 588 11 7 £1272 13 1 £1905 3 8
