AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. TWO RECORDS BROKEN. FINE RUNNING UNDER BAD CONDITIONS. (Per United Peess Association.) WELLINGTON, December 26. Thrills in plenty wore given the crowd of 7000 which gathered at Athletic Park today to watch the Australian and New Zealand field and track games championships. The boating of the New Zealand record in the Broad Jump by C. M. Ebert (New South Wales), a javenlin throw by S. A. Lay, which wont within four inches of the world’s record, the return to form of R. A. Rose, and tho brilliant running of J. Carlton and C. Stuart, two New South Wales boy athletes, were some of the incidents in’ a day of hard struggles. The event of tho day took place when Lay, a brilliant young javelin thrower from Hiawora, sent hi 3 javelin hurtling through tho air for over 218 ft. The world’s record, established by G. Linstrom, of Sweden, in 1924, is 218 ft 6Jin, and Lay teh only a fraction over 4iu snort of this, ’ihe other record which wa,s bettered, was the Broad Jump performance by J. W. Merchant, of U.S.A., in 1923. Merchant jumped 23ft 3-jin, and to-day C. M. Ebert made a jump which was 2iin more than this. Because of tho conditions, however, a strong northerly blowing down the field, no recommendations for records will ho made. Both Lav and Ebert had the wind behind them. Most convincing was tho line young sprinter J. Carlton’s, performance in winning his first Australian and New Zealand title in tho 100 Yards Championship m 10 l-ssec, against a roaring wind. Carlton was pitted against the cream of both countries and won by a clear 4ft. Ho camo away at tho start like a rocket, and raced m crescendo fashion, winning from M. Loadbottcr (Now Zealand), and L. C. iarkor (Ouocnsland), whom tho judges could not separate. Parker has ship twice previously and, like Loadbctlcr, has equalled tho Australian and Now Zealand record of 9 4-sscc. Carlton thus stamps himself as better than tho Lest, and his performance, considering Dio conditions under which it took place, must ho considered as equivalent of breaking lOsce In ’.ho final ho clipped 3-ssco of what ho needed to win ln s heat from ’ bettor. C. H. Jenkins, a Wdlwjßlon “crack,” ian second,, a yard bohmdl . L. • Parker in his heat in 10 3-ssec, but had no Thc " C 44080 8 Championship was another race which revealed class, C. Stuart, a young New Soulth Wales :runner. boating his team mate, W. Hunt, tor the championship. Stuart drew the track and ran like a winner all the way, overhauling Hunt. 40 yards from the tape, and coming in 4ft ahead ot him. Tiie time of 51 W.cc derfully good going. H- L. -Nevuon (N.Z.) was 3yds further back, and last year’s champion, Tv. D. korman (N.S.TA.) Championship saw R. A. Rose give one of his old-time displays, and prove a conclusive winner in The race was run m four aps, and saw j. W. Savidan go out to boat Rose by cracking on the pace from the start. W. Berwick (Tasmania) raced out, but Hallway round Rose overtook him. At tho end of the first lap, which was covered in Imin ssec, Savidan had set out to make tho pace, with Rose hard on his heels, and P J Martin (N.S.W.). W Barwick. and J. »T. Morris following in that order. When the half-mile was passed in 2mm 13see the order was unchanged, feaviclnn and Rose heading the others by seven oi eight yards. Barwick was now straining to maintain the pace which was set. Halfway round tho third lap Martin moved up past Rose, and when they completed three-quarters m 3mm —see havi<lan, Rose, and Martin were bunched. With tho bell Savidan gave all that he possessed, but was remorselessly pursued by Rose. Martin sot out after Rose, but was done when the lap was half gone, and Rose and Savidan had he finish to themselves. Turning into Lie straight Rose had reduced Savidan s lead from Byds to 2yds, and, running strongly, ■won by svds amidst wild enthusiasm. The 120 Yards Hurdle Championship provided a fine finish, when R. W. Lander (Now Zealand), with a desperate elf or t, just managed to defeat last year s winner, E. H. Scott (New South _ Wales), wher ho Bccmffd certain of victory. Lander was hotter away than Scott, but the New South Welshman came up at a terrific speed and passed Lander at the penultimate hurdle. Lander nerved himself and, with a final hurst, closed on Scott as the last hurdle was reached. Here the New Zealander jumped slightly bettor and in a desperate finish he won by a fraction. The time was the good one of 10 2-ssec. W. Lankey (New Zealand) went into the lead when the pistol was fired in the Milo Walk, but was overtaken by E. E. Austin, a vigorous little walker from Now South Wales, 'when the first lap closed. When the second lap was half gone R. Pedersen (New Zealand) was called off by the judge, and when half a mile was passed in 3min 17sce Austin was still a couple of yards ahead of Lankey. When the bell went Austin opened out and boat Lankey by 20 yards, with R. H. Cabot (New Zealand) a long way back third. The judge appeared to have a momentary doubt about Austin just before the straight was reached, but he allowed him past, and he was undoubtedly walking fairly. Tho time was Cmin 52scc. Everyone of tho five fair throws which P. Munro (New Zealand) made when putting the shot was bettor than tho best of A. D. MTntosh (Victoria), who finished in second place. MTntosh recorded his longest toss when he made his second attempt of 41ft 3Jin, and D. Brown (New Zealand), who was third, was unable to improve on his first throw. Munro’s winning effort was his fifth, the sixth trial being a foul putt. His best throw was 2ft 7in better than MTntosh’s. His worst was Ift Gin better. S. A. Lay’s win in the javelin throw was an easy one, the second place winner being almost 35ft short of tho New Zealander’s. With a fine effort C. M. Ebert (N.S.W.) heat his team-mate, D. M’Fay, for the broad jump championship by a quarter of an inch. Ebert’s winning jump was 23ft 6in. Queensland’s only win wa.s in tho polo vault, where E. Keskinen, tho Olympic Games competitor, cleared lift and three-quarter of an inch at his third attempt. E. G. Sutherland (Now Zealand) had wretched luck when tho bar was at 10ft 6in. Twice ho cleared it and pushed his polo away, and each time tho wind swung the pole back for it to knock off the cross-piece. G. Batstono (New Zealand) just Tailed to clear the bar at tho winning height. After his win, Keskinen made two attempts at lift 6in, but failed in each. There were two falls in the cyclists’ handicaps, and H. C. Morris and L. C. Manning were taken to hospital for attention. For the championship shield, towards which only wins count, New South Wales and New Zealand have now scored four points a piece and Queensland one.
