DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. Ernest Rowland Crone, a first-class engine driver, aged 56, died when_ under an anaesthetic at a private hospital m Oamaru on Sunday evening. The deceased had been admitted to the hospital _to undergo an operation for appendicitis. The operation was performed by Drs Douglas and Scott, and Sio amesthetic was administered by Dr Stubbs. After the operation had been practically completed the man s respiration suddenly ceased. Restoratives were administered, but he did not rally. An inquest was hold yesterday before Mr W B. Frith, district coroner. The evidence of the three doctors showed that every possible precaution had been taken, and an examination disclosed no valvular disease of the heart. The deceased had previously been operated on for gallstones. The present operation showed that the appendix was swollen and gangrene had set in. There was little hope of recovery, even had the deceased come out of tlie coroner returned a verdict that the deceased died from_ heart failure while undergoing an operation for appendicitis. The late Mr Crone had been over 38 years in the service of the Railways Department, and would have retired on superannuation in two years’ time. He had been stationed at Bluff, Gore, and Dunedin before being appointed to the Oamaru section about 15 years a°;o. His wife died only two or three weeks ago, and no is survived by one son. He was a member of the Loyal Alfred Lodge of Oddfellows. HOLIDAY WEATHER. The weather for the Christote holidays in North Otago was perfect. There was Lt sufficient breeze to temper therayßof the sun. Private picnics wore held everywhere. All seaside resorts were largely patronised. ASHBURTON CONFERENCE. Messrs R. B. Meek, G. Special Christmas services were held in the various Oamaru churches on Sunday and were largely attended. Appropriate music was rendered on the decision. Christmas carols were played on both Saturday and Sunday nights by various Friday night the Highland Pipe Band proceeded to the public hospital, and gave a programme of music. HALL OF MEMORIES. The tender of Messrs M'Callum and Co. has been accepted for the seating accommodation and furniture for the hall of memories at the Waitaki Boys High School. The furniture is to be made of teak, taken from H.AI.S. New Zealand. RAILWAY TRAFFIC. The passengers booked at the Oamaru Railway Station from December 18 to 24 numbered 2899, the revenue being £863 11s 6d. The number of passengers showed an increase of 849 over last year for the same period. The revenue from the refreshment room was £464 11s lid for the period. DUNTROON SPORTS. The annual meeting of the Duntroon Caledonian Society was held on the Duntroon Domain yesterday. The weather was glorious, and there was a large attendance of the public. The gate takings amounted to £3B. The track was in fair order. The times registered were, on the whole, very good, and all the events were put through in a manner which reflects great credit upon the officials. The main running event was won by J. R. The North Otago Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament was opened on Saturday and continued yesterday, ihe weather on both days was ideal, and some good tennis resulted. The arrangements wore complete in detail, and- the games wore witnessed by a considerable number of enthusiasts. The ladies games were played on the Awarnod courts, and the men’s on the Oamaru .courts One of the best contested games in the ladies division was played in the singles championship between Miss Lister and Mrs Duthic' This was ultimately won by Miss Lister. 13—11.
