ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR JANUARY.

THE SUN. The sun’s path during the month of January will lie in R.A. from 18.42.49 to 20.51.20, in declination from 23.5.3 to 17.38.44 south, and in longitude from 279.50.23 to 310.22.53. The earth is in perihelion on the 4th. During 1928 there will be five eclipses, three of the sun and two of the moon. The eclipses of the sun will, however, not be visible in Now Zealand. THE MOON. The phases of the moon will be as follow: — Pull moon .. 7th 5.38 p.m. Last quarter loth 8.44 a.m. New moon .. 23rd 7.49 a.m. First quarter 30th 0.56 a.m. Perigee .. 4th 10.6 a.m. Apogee .. 16th 6.18 a.m. Perigee .. 29th 11.0 p.m. THE PLANETS. Mercury will be in R.A. from 18.23.46 to 21.52.12, and in south declination from 24.44.58 to 14.5.47. It will be in superior conjunction with the sun on the 9th, and will be in conjunction with the moon on the 23rd. Venus will be in R.A. from 15.41.25 to 18.12,49, and in south declination from 17.6.1 to 22.6.54. It will be in conjunction with Saturn on the 16th, and with the moon on the 19th. Mars will be in R.A. from 17.4.10 to 18.40.7, and in declination from 23.6.35 to 23.44.34 south. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 20th. Jupiter will be in R.A. from 23.49.32 to 0.7.38, and in south declination from 2.31.22 to 0.27.18. It will be in conjunction with Uranus on the 23rd, and with the moon on the 27th. Saturn will be in R.A. from 16.49.27 to 17.2.8, and in south declination from 20.54.55 to 21.13.28. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 19th. Uranus will be in conjunction with the moon on the 26th, and Neptune will be in conjunction with the moon on the 10th.
