CORRUPT POLITICAL PRACTICES. TO THE EDITOR. Sui,—Mr R. A. Armstrong makes a very poor attempt to cover up ingeniously his tracks as chairman of the Racing Club Instating that he was neither an officer nor a member of the Sports Protection League. I did not say ho was chairman of the Sports’ Protection League. \Vhy does ne seek to twist what I said in that way; But he does not deny that he was chairman of the racing club that was moving through the Sports’ Protection League to obtain secret pledges from candidates for Parliament. Anyhow, Mr Armstrong must have known that those bodies with which he is so closely associated wore extracting ■ secret pledges’ and that candidates were informed that the league did not wish to raise the question on the public platform, and that candidates were invited to send their answers direct to the Sports’ Protection League so that the league could advise its branches in the candidate’s electorate how they were pledged. I am sorry my letter was so much a repetition of the one which appeared in the Dominion, but I had to repeat word for word the secret pledge, as stated in the original circular sent out bv the Sports’ Protection League. Can Mr Armstrong explain why he did not take strong exception to these secret pledges when he and other liquor supporters denounce the perfectly honest methods of the prohibition party in asking candidates to state publicly their attitude on important phases of the liquor euestion.—l arn, etc., Pv. D. Poi-SON, Hon. Secretarv U.T.R.C. Sawyers’ Bay, December 23. [The ” secret pledge ” formed only a email portion of the letter that was transcribed and represented as an original document. —Ed, O.D.T.]
