Two years’ reformative treatment was ordered by the magistrate for a girl of 19 who had a child ih the hospital and tried to commit suicide by tying a cord around her neck, subsequently escaping several times in her nightdress. WELLINGTON, December 23.

The machinery for the administration of the RUral Intermediate Credits Act -of last session is contained in a bulky set of regulations just issued. Th e matters dealt with by the regulations, apart from the boards to be established, include the granting of loans, the payment of dividends, produce in warehouses, the discounting of promissory notes and bills of exchange, finance, and accounts, and debentures and stock. The regulations are to come into force on January 1. About 4.15 p.m. to-day a fire occurred in one of i.be completed sheds of the new railway workshops at Lower Hntt. Ihe Lower Hutt Fire Brigade found the toof blazing fiercely. About half the roof was totally destroyed, only the steel girdcis remaining. The cause of the fire is unknown. EKETAHUNA. December 23. At a special pool taken at Eketahuna yesterday, it was decided bv nearly four votes to one to revert to the Wednesday half-holiday. At the last municipal elections the Saturday half-holiday was carried by a small majority, but the effect on trade was such that special parliamentary provision was secured to take another poll.
