WORLD TELEGRAPHY
EFFECT OF BEAM WIRELESS. THE WHOLE ASPECT CHANGED. (Frcu Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) LONDON, December 22. At Marconi’s annual meeting Lord Inverforth, who presided, in moving the adoption of the annual report, said that probably the best tonic for Mr Marconi was the knowledge that the beam had come into its own. It had completely changed the whole aspect of world telegraphy. Alluding to the sixpenny dividend, he said that the directors realised the small return, but they did not feel that a larger one was justified. Referring to telephony, he said that the technical staff was constructing a special telephone apparatus, and preparing for beam telephone trials on a commercial scale.. The results thus far were distinctly encouraging. It was hoped before long to have efficient commercial telephony between England and th e dominions. A great deal had been said on the question of wireless versus the cable, which was treated as if it was exclusively a question of strategic safety. While it was of great importance to see the Empire provided with the best communications in the event of war, it was no less important that merchants and businessmen should have a system of the cheapest and most reliable facilities for a rapid exchange of business, press, and social messages. Nothing must be done to remove this advantage, provided the beam was able to carry trade telegrams more cheaply than any other system. The motion for the adoption of the report was carried by 1,250,056 to 55,147. — A. and N.Z. Gable.
