It is reported that the well-known Federal Steam Navigation Company's steamer Essex, which has been a regular trader between the United Kingdom and New Zealand and Australian ports lor a number of years, has been sold to Belgian buyers, the price reported being about £20.000. Tha Essex is an old vessel, having been built in 1902, at Clydebank, Scotland, oy J. Brown and Co. She is a twin-screw BtMmM of 7210 tons gross and 4401 tons net.

The American steamer West Calera sailed yesterday afternoon for New Plymouth, where the remainder of her assorted freight from Pacific Coast ports will be discharged. The Westport Coal Company's collier Canopus arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday morning from Westport, via Lyttelton, uo undergo annual overhaul. The Kahika is due at Dunedin to-morrow from Gisborne and Wellington with general cargo. The Waipiata, from Auckland, was to leave Napier last night for Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin. The Karetu was expected to leave Sydney yesterday for Dunedin, Oamaru and Lyttelton with general cargo. She should arrive here about Wednesday next. The Kamo has been fixed to load at Auckland about the middle of next week for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff, The O. and D Line steamer Port Denison arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Bluff to continue Homeward loading. The Canadian Scottish is reported to have arrived at New York on December 16. She sailed from Auckland on November 4 for New York, Boston, and Halifax. The Kaponga is now loading at Greymouth, and will sail thence to Melbourne. Stud sheep will be landed at Punta Arenas. GISLA FROM CANADA. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the motor ship Gisla, from Sydney (Nova Scotia), Montreal, and Newport News, via northern ports, is now due at Dunedin on December 29 to discharge a quantity of Canadian cargo. The Gisla will sail about December 30 for Melbourne and Sydney to complete discharge. POEtf CAROLINE LEAVES PANAMA. Cable advice received states that the C. and D. Line steamer Port Caroline, en route from London to Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff, cleared P'anama on December 20. The vessel is duo at Lyttelton about January 12. HARDWOOD FROM BUNBFRY. Advice has been received that t’.e steamer Yoseric. has been fixed to load Australian hardwood at Bunbury about the middle < ' January for Now Zealand ports. OYDONIA FROM MONTREAL. Advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the Cydonia, en route from Montreal and Sydney (Cape Breton) to Auckland, Wellington, Lytteltcn, Dunedin and Australian ports, sailed from Panama on December 17. She is due at Auckland about January 14.

■PHOSPHATE CARGOES. The steamer Kintyre is expected to leave Casablanca, 'Morocco, shortly, with a full cargo of phosphates for discharge at New Plymouth and Wanganui. The Kintyre will be followed from Casablanca about a week later by the Indianola, with a full cargo of phosphates for Auckland and Lyttelton. The Indianola is expected to reach Auckland early in February. NEWCASTLE COAL SHIPMENTS. The quantity of coal (including bunkers) chipped at Newcastle during the week ended December 9, for places beyond the State was 15,964 tons, of which 15,564 tons represented shipments for Commonwealth and New Zealand ports, the remainder being for foreign ports. The steel single screw cargo vessel Belpamela, built to the order of A. S. Roderiet Belmoira, Oslo, by Sir W G. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co,, Ltd., was successfully launched from the Armstrong yard on November 0. The principal dimensions of the vessel are - —Length overall 340 ft 9in, length between perpendiculars 325 ft, breadth (moulded) 49ft, depth (moulded to upper deck) 23ft 6in. The vessel Is designed to carry about 4325 tons on a mean draught of 19ft Din and is of the single-deck type with poop, bridge and forecastle, built to Lloyd's highest class. Sue is fitted with two large cargo holds and specially arranged cargo hatches for the carriage of locomotives. The captain's accommodation is fitted on the bridge and upper bridge decks, the officers and engineers in the poop alongside the machinery casing, and the crew are berthed In the aft end of the poop. The double bottom Is arranged for oil fuel and water ballast. Electric generating plant is installed, consisting of two dynamos, each driven by a Diesel engine, together with wireless installation. A horizontal direct acting steam .windlass, capable of working a bower cable and bower anchors, is fitted on the forecastle head. Six winches are fitted, four on the upper deck and two on the poop for general cargo, also a warping capstan on the poop, and in addition two electric winches for heavy lifts In the fore end of the poop. The vessel Is fitted with six five-tons, one 30-tons and one 100 tons derricks. The steering gear is of the Donkin Scott electric type, fitted direct to the rudder head. The propelling machinery, which has been constructed at the marine engine department of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., consists of a single screw Armstrong Sulzer Diesel engine of the two cycle type, capable of developing 1350 b.h.. at 110 revolutions per minute.
