CITY POLICE COURT.

Frida f, December 23. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Joseph Patrick Hussey and William Thomas Allen, statutory first; offenders, for drunkenness, were each fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. A TOUCH OF ’FLU. A touch of influenza was given by a first offender as the reason for his condition on the previous evening.—“ I did not have a drop between 5 p.m, and 11 p.m. yesterday,” he said. “ Then I met two “ jokers ” and had a couple of spots. The excitement affected me.”—The defendant, who was charged with being found drank, added that his was an excitable nature. — ThcMagistrate advised him to keep off liquor during the holidays, and convicted and discharged him. PROBATIONER IN TROUBLE. A breach of his prohibition order and a charge of drunkenness wore responsible for-the appearance of John Ernest Webber, who pleaded guilty.—Senior Sergeant Quartermain said that the accused had been previously admitted to probation for theft, when ho had been ordered to make restitution and take out a prohibition order against himself.—The Probation Officer (Mr J. Garbutt) said that the accused was in constant employment, and his conduct had previously been good.— On the charge of drunkenness the accused was fined 12s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. On the other charge he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within six months. —“ It is not necessary for him to be charged with a broach of his probation,” said the Magistrate. A PAWNED VIOLIN.

Edward M‘Kny pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a violin valued at £45, the property of Iris Amelia Howes.— Chief Detective Cameron asked for a week’s remand in order that inquiries might be made.—“ What are the particulars of the case," asked the Magistrate. —The Chief Detective stated that the accused was a single man who had been in Dunedin for a week. He w*as formerly a ship’s steward, and had resided in New Zealand for 12 months. Since his arrival in Dunedin he had been staying at the Rainbow Boarding House, and while there he took the violin and pawned it for £l, giving a false name and address. When arrested he had in his possession another pawn ticket taken out in Wellington, and the police wished for time to investigate it.— “ I had intentions of putting it back,” said the accused. —“ What!” said the Magistrate. “ And you gave a false name and address?” —The Accused sai that he thought any name wouid do.—A remand was granted until December 30.
