Mr and Mrs H. S. Bingham and family will leave to-day for a motor tour of Christchurch, the West Coast, and Nelson districts. ’ At the break-up of the Kuriwao School, the pupils presented their teacher, Miss J. R. Youngson, with a manicure set. Mr S. D. Neill, who has been on a visit to England and the Continent, returned to Dunedin this week by the Rimutaka. Mr H. S. Hammond, local manager of the National Bank, left on Thursday morning for three weeks’ holiday in Auckland. A cablegram from Sydney states that the engagement is announced of Miss Phyllis von Alwyn, who was chosen Miss Australia for 1927, and the cricketer. Jack Gregory. , The appreciation of his services to the company and the assistance he had given the dirwtors, Mr Kum Poy (secretary of the Nokomai Sluicing Company) was presented' with a fountain pen at a meeting of shareholders of the company yesterday morning. , , Mr Charles T. Calhs, after 43 years service with the Bank of Australasia, xs retiring on pension, and yesterday afternoon, subsequent to the closing of the bank, ho was presented by the manager (Mr A. H. Myles), on behalf of the staff, with a handsome suitcase, suitably inscribed. ... , , „ Probably there are friends of the Rev. W H Ash, living in Dunedin and the Nasobv district, who will be interested to hoar that he is now living in .retirement at Alphington, Melbourne. Mr Ash spent most of his early life in Otago, leaving it on account of ill-health some 26 years ago. He was educated in the Dunedin High School, University, and Presbyterian Theological Hall. Beginning with journalism, he entered upon a law course in the University, but finding church work pressing upon him he ejavo up his law studies and entered the Church. His first charge was Ravcnsbourne, but a nervous breakdown compelled him reluctantly to seek another olimato. Going to New South Wales, he spent 10 years in North Sydney, and built up a strong church. Again breaking down, ho had to go to the country. Three years ago he had to retire permanently. Ho and his four children are now li»mg m Melbourne.
