The Rev. W. V. Milne and Mrs Milne, of Nguna, New Hebrides, arrived in Dunedin on Wednesday night on furlough. Mr and Mrs J. Mr J. C. Murray, manager of ‘he Vacuum Oil Company for Otago and Southland loft on Wednesday morning to catch the Marama at Wellington on a business visit to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr H. A. Parker, the former Australian and New Zealand lawn tennis champion, arrived in Auckland from Svdncy by the Aorangi on Monday, and after a short tour of the Dominion no will proceed to England. It is now 14 years since Mr Parker played international and interstate tennis. In addition to winning every Australian inter-State championship he was singles and doubles champion of New Zealand on numerous occasions. In 1805 and in 1908 ho was a member of the Australian Davis Cup team. A pleasing function took place at the Balclutha lawn tennis courts on Wednesday, when the members of die culb met to bid farewell to three of their departing members —Misses E. Hislor and K. M’Namara and Mr S, W. Lane, In presenting each one with a gift from the members,'” Mr E. Barnett, president, referred to the good work done by them for the club, both as playing membes and on the committee. Mr James Guest and Mrs Sim also referred to the loss the club would sustain, and wished them all success. Miss Hislop and Miss M’Namara returned thanks, Mr Lane being unavoidably absent. An Auckland Press Association telegram states that Mr Stanley Logan Paterson, of the firm of Meredith, Paterson and 'Hubble,' has been appointed to tho_ magisterial bench. He was born at Napier, and was educated at Christchurch. He obtained his degree at Canterbury College in 1916, in which year ho was admitted as a barrister and solicitor. Ho served in the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force from 1916 to 1918. Strong testimony to Mr R. L. Luke’s popularity as headmaster of the NorthEast Harbour School was shown by the large number of Peninsula residents who met in the Macandrew’s Bay hall on Tuesday evening to tender to Mr ond Mrs Luke a farewell social. Mr Luke has been headmaster of the school for eight years, and besides being popular, ho was also regarded as a highly efficient teacher. Mr A. MTiutchon, who occupied chair, expressed the regret of the residents at his departure. Expressions of regret were also made by representatives of the Presbyterian Church, the Ratepayers’ Association, the Boating Club, the school committee, the swimming club and the various other organisations in the district with which ho had become associated. On behalf of the residents Mr MTiutchon presented Mr Luke with a gold watch and chain, and Mrs Luko with a flower bowl, Mr Luke made an appreciative reply, after which supper was served and a dance followed. Through (bo passing of Mr James Stevenson, of Froshford, the district, has lost a resident of 40 years’ standing (says the Southland Times). Mr Stevenson was a son of Mr J. Stevenson, of VVaitati He worked for several years in the Froshford and Wendonsido districts, and some 20 years ago resided at Croydon Bush. Of late years ho had been employed convoying pupils to the Wendon School. About three (months ago the deceased became an inmate of the Gore Hospital, and he passed away on Monday morning in his sixtieth year. Ho was a bachelor. Ho is survived hy a brother, Robert Stevenson (Dunedin), and two sisters, Mrs F. W. Richardson '.Croydon Bush) and Mrs T. Burke (Invercargill) On the afternoon of December 15 a very pleasant function was held in the rooms of the. Palmerston branch of the Blanket Society. The committee and mothers of babies who had been attended by Nurse Rogers, met, together to express their great appreciation of the work done by her during the year. The presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made to Nurse Rogers, who gracefully acknowledged the gift. During the afternoon the ladies were entertained at tea by Mrs Thomas, the president of the branch. Mr Ci Mayne, of Sawyers’ Bay. who left the district about two years ago on the steamer Tasmania after completing an apprenticeship in the engineering trade at the Maori Ironworks, has made good headway and would have probably obtained a chief engineer’s certificate of competency in marine engineering but for the fact that ho had not reached the stipulated age when ho left London a few months ago to bring out a vessel tor the Melbourne Harbour Trust. Mr Mayne is at present here on a few weeks’ holiday leave. An old and respected resident of Balclutha passed away on Wednesday night in the person of Mrs J. C. Bishop, at the advanced ego of 81. She was of the true pioneering stock, having as a girl come out from Scotland with her parents in the ship Victory in 1863, 64 years ago. Mcrfather, the Into Mr Thomas Robinson, was manager for Mr Robert Paterson, ot Barnogo, ’ for some years. In company with her husband the deceased lady revisited tho Old Country in 1892. Mr Bishop was a successful farmer of the Hillend district, and 21 years ago removed to Balclutha, where ho acquired a substantial property in South Clyde street. llis death took place 15 years ago, and his widow has resided at Balclutha ever since, with the exception of short visits to relatives in other parts of the Dominion. She was a woman of kindly self-reliant nature and extremely well liked by all who know her. Her death will be_ sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends and neighbours in town and country. She is survived by one son (Mr Thomas Bishop, Hiilond) and three daughters—Mrs W. Willocks (Dunedin) and Mrs -D. Johnston (Stonv Creek). The funeral, a private one, takes" place to tho Balclutha Cemetery today.
