On Sunday afternoon last Miss Barron’s Hospital Choir, representing Knox Church, visited Ashburn Hall, and sang Christmas carols and hymns to the inmates of the institution, who fully appreciated the kindness of the choir. Thanks were returned by the superintendent, Dr Falconer, and by one of the inmates. Solos were sung by Misses Vida Barron and Scoular and Messrs Wilson and Oliver. The members of the choir were entertained by Dr Falconer and the staff at afternoon tea, after which they were shown over the beautiful grounds of Ashburn Hall. On Wednesday evening the same choir visited the Benevolent Institution, when Christmas carols and hymns were sung. Solos were rendered by Misses M’Gibbon, Hope, and Hodges, and Messrs Wilson, Oliver, and Lennon. The evening closed with community singing and a brief speech by the superintendent. Mr M’Pherson also spoke a few words, and on behalf of the inmates thanked the choir for its kindness in providing the entertainment. The quarterly meeting of Court Little John, A.0.F., was held on Tuesday evening. C.R. Sister Jessie Sinclair was in the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. The district executive was represented by D.S.C.R. Bro. Vercoe, who was accorded a hearty welcome. As is usual on the last meeting night in the year, the sisters were entertained by the brothers. The Secretary (Bro. Wilson) referred to the great assistance given to the court by the sisters, and spoke on the teachings of the Order and the necessity of fostering the fraternal spirit. There was a danger of too much attention being given to the commercial side, and there was a danger of the splendid teachings being overlooked. D.S.C.R. Bro. Vercoe responded for the D.E., and congratulated the court on the splendid hospitality always shown visitors. It was always a pleasure to visit the court. He was pleased at the efforts made to bring the members together. He concluded by wishing all present the compliments of the season. C.R. Sister Sinclair thanked the brothers for the splendid way they had entertained the sisters. Dancing and games filled the remainder of the evening. The Hope of Dunedin Lodge held its weekly meeting on Wednesday evening last, Bro. Chapman, chief templar, presiding. The Chief Templar notified the lodge of the death that morning of Bro. Jack MaeManus after a long and painful illness in Dunedin Hospital. Bro. Robertson. lodge deputy, moved a vote of sympathy to Bro. Gore in the loss of his grandson, also to Bro. and Sis. MaeManus in the loss of their eldest sou. In putting the motion, the Chief Templar stated .vat the brother’s great personality had endeared him to all, and his loss would be greatly felt. Bro. lies, chief templar of the Rescue Lodge, also spoke to tho motion on behalf of his lodge. Yesterday afternoon Bro. Jack MaeManus was laid to rest in Anderson’s Bav Cemetery. Bro. Chapman, C.T., Bro. Robertson, L.D., and Sis. Mrs South, sen. V.T., officiated in the Good Templar funeral service, supported by a good number of lodge ’ members. Many relatives and friends were present.
