CROQUET.

For some time past croquet players in Otago have been considering the advisability of forming an association in the district, thus coming into line with northern centres. To discuss the project the committee of the Punga Club issued invitations to the various clubs in Otago to send delegates to a meeting that was held in the club’s pavilion last Thursday. Of the 12 clubs in Otago, nine were represented. Mrs Bridgman, president of the Punga Club, welcomed the delegates and expressed gratification at finding so many clubs sufficiently interested in the matter to attend the meeting. The number present seemed proof enough that the time had arrived to form an Otago Croquet Association. Airs Briggs, president of St. Clair Club, was elected to the chair. The secretary of the Punga Club read some correspondence that had been received from the secretary of the New Zealand Croquet Council in connection with the matter, and the rules that govern similar associations in other centres.

After a pood deal of discussion it was resolved —" That this meeting of delegates form itself into a body_ calling itself the Otago Croquet Association." The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mrs Bridgman (Punga); vice-presidents—Mrs Briggs (St. Clair), Mrs Waters (Alexandra), Miss Phinn (Balmacewan). A meeting will be held early in the year to adopt rules and regulations, and to appoint the necessary officers to carry on the business of the assocation. Jt will be of interest to croquet players to learn that the English team will arrive in the Dominion in time to play a North Island test match at Wanganui when the North Island championships are being held. It will then go to Palmerston North and will probably play in the Dominion championship tournament, held there on February 6 and following days, and will play a * cst match against the best five of New Zealand. After this it is the intention to visit the thermal district of the north for a couple of weeks. From there the team will come south to play a South Island test match at Christchurch. It is intended to visit the southern lakes, and it is hoped by the clubs here to induce it to give an exhibition game or play a match in Dunedin. Two members of the Punca Croquet Club (Mrs Manhire and Mrs BrickelH have journeyed to Christchurch to compete in the Canterbury croquet championship tournament, whi'-h will be commenced on Box in ir Day. Mr? Manhire, the Otago champion, will be partnered by Arthur Ro?3 (Canterbury champion) in the double*.
