POWER BOARD SEEKS EXEMPTION, (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, December 21. The Poverty Bay Power Board applied to the Arbitration Court to-day for exemption from the provisions of the Northern Industrial Union'electrical workers’ award. The board had been cited to be joined as a party by the Auckland Electrical Workers’ Union. Mr O’Leary appeared for the union and Mr W. H Westbrooke (secretary of the Employees’ Association) and Mr F. R. Ball (chairman" of the Power Board) appeared for the board.
The Court told the applicants plainly that they could not hope to obtain exemption from the award. The nyo.-tion of hours was discussed at length. The union wanted the hours to be eight and a-half per day, while the boa; d asked for nine hours. Mr Ball stated that this was a request from the workers concerned.
The court left the question of hours to be decided by a meeting of the men concerned to be held during the first week in January. The local Labour officer will preside" and the board and union will have representatives present.
