(Received Dec. 21, at 10 p.m.) Fifty millions were saved from the sea by Sir Frederick Young, who died in a London hospital to-day. The Admiralty recognised him as the world’s greatest salvager, and for more than thirty years ho was known ns “ Young of Liverpool.” Before the war he recovered £750,000 of specie from the Oceana, which sank off Eastbourne, and £500,000 from the Minnehana. off Scilly Islands. In war time the Admiralty secured his services to salve warships, and under his direction no fewer than 400 ships were saved for the Allies. Ho was the first to raise a German U boat. Another great feat was the blocking of Portland Harbour by sinking the old battleship Hood, but his most thrilling exploit was the raising of the British submarine Kl 3, which sank through the ventilating arrangements being accidentally left open. He raised her after 56 hours, saving the lives of the crow of -lo. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
