“ CAPTAIN MOONLITE.”
TO I'Hl KIU'IOB. Sir —The reference in your issue of the 17th inst. of the hold-up of the Wantabudgery Station by the “ Moonlite ” Rang came as a great surprise to me It is the first I knew 1 of “ Captain Moonlite ” being such a desperate character. If my memory serves me right, there is a little confusion in the old story as retold. “ Captain Moonlite ” was a son of the Rev. Andrew Scott, a P/esbyterian minister, North Auckland. Ncsbit, Gorman, Williams, alias Johns. Bennett, Stanlev (the last-mentioned being only 15 years of age), and he carried their swags from each in possession ol firearms. A dispute arose over the rations that were handed out to them, and “ Captain Moonlite ” pointed his gun at the manager’s head, this constituting a holdup. Word was sent to the police, and a few hours later the fight took place. Gorman and Stanley, together with Sorrrpnnt Bowen, were shot dead. r I he other four surrendered, and were tried at l)arlinghnrst before Mr Justice Windeyn. ■'Captain Moonlite'’ addressed (be jury for five hours and three-nuarters, pleading on behalf of his fellow-prisoners and taking all the blame on himself. Moonlite ” and Ncsbit were banged, and Williams and Bennett received 13 years e-ieh. After serving six years Bennett was released, nnd returned to bis borne in Victoria. The hold-up lasted only a few hours. — T am, etc., N. R. Wai.es.
