SANDERS CUP TRIALS.

SAILING COMMITTEE’S REPORT. FOURTH RACE TO BE SAILED. Details in connection with trial races recently held on Otago Harbour between Jellicoe class and Takapuna class boats for Sanders Cup and Cornwell Cup honours were dealt with at a meeting of delegates to tire Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, held last evening. Those present were: Messrs J. T. Paul (president), H. Camp, A. D. Asher, F. Boswell, G. F. Bewtoy, T. Brooks, E. T. Holler, and W. O. Martin. The Canterbury Yachting Association wrote stating that challenges had been received from Auckland, Wellington, Otago and Southland. Mr H. Camp, on behalf of the Sailing Commitlee, reported to the effect that thtee trial races had been sailed, and the committee was unanimous that there had not vet been a fair trial. The committee recommended that a trial race be sailed at Macandrcw’s Bay on Boxing Day in con junction with the regatta. The Eileen had won three races, and the committe was of the opinion that she had been more capably handled than the other boats. If there was a strong wind at Macandrew's Bay on Monday, they would no doubt get a fair trial. The enthusiasm was very keen, and while such great interest was being shown, the association should continue the trials, as the public was looking forward to these races. Mr J. T. Paul said that if another trial were held it might complicate matters. If another boat won at Macandrew’s Bay, the association could not choose a boat having fewer wins than Eileen. A member remarked that this had been done on a previous occasion. Mr Paul said such a course had been followed, and had caused no end of trouble. Mr W. O. Martin said he was of the opinion that the association should decide on a selection at this period. The Sailing Committee no doubt had something in mind as it was so anxious to hold further trials. ... Mr E. T. Moller said it would be disast rous to finish the trials at the present tipie as so much interest was being created. After all it was the public which contributed to the cost of sending the selected boat and crew away, and the public had to be considered. Mr T. Brooks said that while he approved of the Sailing Committee’s recommendation to hold further trials, he did not think it advisable to hold any trial race in conjunction with any regatta. In his opinion Macandrcw’s Bay was not a suitao.e place to hold any test trial race. It was decided to hold the fourth trial race at Macandrew’s Bay next Monday afternoon. , . , ~ Mr Camp explained that the trial would have no connection whatever with the regatta. CORNWELL CUP CONTEST. The Secretary of the Takapuna Boating Club (Auckland) wrote stating that visiting crews competing in the 1928 Cornwell Cup contest, to bo commenced at Auckland on January 14, would receive a hearty welcome from the club officials and the committee, as also would the fathers of the lads and all visitors. It had been decided to use the Takapuna Club s boathouse as a hostel, and every effort would bo made to provide for the comfort and entertainment of visitors during the period of the contest The club would undertake the full responsibility of catering for Die crews, their fathers, and delegates to the conference, and for the visitors in the hostel. The club wished to ascertain the number of visitors likely to journey to Auckland from Otago, to enable the committee to make the necessary arrangemerits. , , , , Mr Camp said three trial races had been sailed between Colleen and Betty on Otago Harbour, and the Sailing Committee was unanimous in its decision that H. Riddell and C. Churchill be selected U. represent Otago in the contest. Riddell and Churchill had won two races in a slower boat, and had shown better seamanship than O. Campbell and J. Ross, tno C T wis unanimously decided that Riddell and Churchill represent Otago in the conteit was decided to appoint a member of the association as manager of the Utago crew and delegate to the conference.
