ASHBURTON COUNTY.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.

(Per United Press Associatioh.l ASHBURTON, December 20.

The official celebration of the jubilee of Ashburton County was held to-day, though the actual date fell on January 4 last. Tli e ceremony took the form of driving a peg to mark the site of the bridge, which the council proposes to erect to replace the present structure over th c Ashburton River on the Main South road. By a happy coincidence this is practically on the spot where the first settler, Air William Turton, established himself as ferryman and accommodation house keeper, and where his son, Air J. O. Turton, the first European born in the county, was born. Air J. G. Turton, who is now a. resident of Peel Forest, was assisted bv Air W. T. Lill, senior member of flic council and the chairman of the Works Committee, in driving the peg. Among thc speakers were Mr W. Nosworthy, member for the district, Mr 1). Jones (member for Ellesmere), and Mr T. D. Burnett (member for Tcmuka). Tlio Prime Alinister sent a telegram of apology and cordial good wishes. The proceedings concluded with a social gathering, a number of toasts being honoured.

Fish eyes arc considered a table delicacy in thc West Indies, and boiled salmon eyes, which resemble large blueberries, arc a favourite dish in Eastern Asia. Would-be motorists in Los Angelos go through a “ driving test ” with model vehicles so arranged on a “ street diagram ” as to provide all kinds of traffic problems.
