PERSISTENT BURGLARS.
A DARING ATTEMPT. ALL EFFORTS UNSUCCESSFUL. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. December 20. An impudent and daring attempt was made by two men in the early hours of Sunday morning io enter a Cashmere Hills residence. Presumably, they had expected to find the house empty, as th© owners were absent on holiday, but when they were surprised by two young women in the house they persisted in their efforts to force an entrance until the girls’ screams drew the attention of Mr R. Moore, M.L.C., who resides nearby. Awakened suddenly by sounds of movement outside the room in which they were sleeping, the women were startled to see, ths figure of a man silhouetted on the panes of the glass window in the door leading from the balcony. Roth girls screamed, but one of them at once rang up the police. Hearing the telephone call, the man on the balcony renewed his efforts to force the door but without success. In the meantime he was joined by his confederate, who had been heard trying to open the back door of the house. The two then endeavoured to prise open t fanlight over the window in another bed-' room, paying no attention to the scream* of the girls. „ The men failed in this, and went round to the back of the house.
The girls decided to make a dash for th© house next door, and they had reached the street when Mr Moore arrived. He was in time to see the men clambering over a fence into an empty section. The police arrived soon afterwards. They searched the neighbourhood, but the men had disappeared.
