A Boston Navy Yard official announced this afternoon that the submarine S 3 had received a message from the survivors of the wrecked S 4 this morning appealing for oxygen and rations. The signal message was picked up by oscillators from S 4, and read : “ Oxygen bottle empty. 'Can you send down a couple?” It may be possible for the divers to place oxygen, bottled soda, lime, and emergency rations in torpedo tube. The trapped men reported that the temperature was then 37dcg. The commander controlling the forces replied : “ Everything possible has been done and will be done.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.

A PLAINTIVE MESSAGE,

“ IS THERE ANY HOPE? ”

NEW YORK, December 19. (Received Dec. 20, at 7.20 p.m.) With the issuance of storm warnings for the section where the disaster occurred the rescuers believe that the operation will have to be suspended until better weather prevails. The official in command of the rescue fleet said that the sea was too rough for diving operations and too rough for the ship Falcom to remain at any one spot. The last communication with the imprisoned men was at 4.45 p-m., at which hour they gave themselves an hour and a-quarter to live. The sister submarine, S 3, standing by the spot, nicked un a hammered code message, asked, “ IS there any hope? ’’-A. and N.Z. Cable.
