DOG BREEDING IN ENGLAND.

TARGE INVESTMENTS. Dog breeding is an industry which is flourishing at the moment in England {states the London correspondent of the Melbourne Argus). Millions of pounds are invested in the industry. A quarter of a million pedigree dßgs have been registered with the Kennel Club during the last six years, dogs being added to the register at the rate of 250 a day. Whereas 16.000 dogs were registered in 1920, 60,000 were registered in 1926. The entries for the Kennel Club’s show in October numbered 5500. the value of the dogs being about £IOO,OOO. Among the registrations during the first half of 1927 were 4000 Alsatians, 3900 wire-haired terriers, 2400 Airedales, and 2000 cocker spaniels. The dogs registered with the Greyhound Racing Association for the new sport of following a dummy hare number 1500. In addition 3700 greyhounds are registered in the stud hook of the National Coursing Chili. Th e most valuable of the racing grevhounds is Mr E. Baxter’s Entry Radge, which is probably worth £2.00. Entry Badge will go to the stud at the end of the season, with a fee of 25gns, considerably more than the average stud fee of a Waterloo Cup courser. Many grevhouuds are bred in Ireland, the average" price of untested racers being £25 apiece. A dog capable of winning races inav be worth any price from £4OO. A great deal of public money ha-, been fibscribed recently for tracks. It '‘.-ill he interesting to s‘-e whether dog racing establishes itself sufficiently to give a fair return to investors. At the moment a large public is interested in dog racing, but gublic interest is apt to be fickle.
