WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday, and was attended by Crs J. Preston (chairman), J. M'Lachlan, E. Lalcy, A. Heckler, and George Gilmore. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Inspector (Mr T. Lang) reported as follows;

Bawskbury Hiding.—Seventy-five yards of Shag River gravel have been carted out to the Main road between Waikouaiti and Palmerston, and 96 yard s on Puddy'a road, Flag Swamp road and Bush road. A slip has been cleared from the Quarry road and another slip filled in opposite the quarry. A few loads of rotten rock have been taken from the quarry to repair this road, but it stilly requires about 50 yads. The ford at Eldorado has been improved by levelling the gravel bed and widening the channel. Various portions of the road leading to it have been surfaced. Cyclone netting has been put on the sides of the bridge at Orbcll’s. and a culvert 6ft in width has been built across Wilkinson's road at Nonthorn. —Approved. Morton Riding.—Two hundred yards of metal wore crushed at the beginning of the month, mostly for the Main road between Evansdalo and Waitati, befor c shifting the crusher to the quarry near Ham mond’s, whore 50 yards were crushed and spread on tho road near the quarry. Seventy-two yards wore crushed and spread on M-ackay’s road, and the crusher is now started on tho metal' for Ape’s road. A sharp bend on this road has been improved, by cutting off tho corner of Mr Apes’ paddock. One hundred and thirty tons of Logan’s Point metal hav e been used to repair the Main road on tho Flat, and part of tho metal has been blinded with gravel, A commencement was made in gravelling tho road to th 0 beach at Karitane, but it had to be left in the meantime, as the teams wore required to cart metal. Twenty yards of metal from the crusher were spread on the road between Evansdalo and Warrington, and blinded with gravel. An old culvert near Omimi broke down, and has been renewed with 12in pipes.—Approved. Blueskin Riding.—Slips have been cleared from Lower Harbour road and holes filled with gravel from the beach. Several portions of the footpath at Purakanui have been re-formed and the soft places paved with stones. A 6in pipe culvert has been put across the road near Mr Bambcrry’s property at Waitati. One hundred and thirty yards of metal have been spread on the Main road towards Evansdalo during the month, and pot-holc s filled with metal. —Approved. North-East. Valley Riding.—Tho bed of Burns’ Crook has been deviated to stop tho water from' cutting in at tho foot of the slip above tho bridge, and the bridge over Ecrguson’s Creek is being repaired. Screenings have been spread on the footpath on the Station road at Sawyers’ Bay, and water-tables cleaned out. Tho culvert near the ball has been lifted and re-laid. — proved. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote advising that a cheque for £579 3s 6d, balance of tho promised contribution of £I2OO towards work on the Leith Valley road, would be forwarded in duo course.—Received. —Tho money was for improving vhc-Waitati-Wakari section of tho road. The Peninsula County Council wrote inquiring when tho Waikouaiti County Council would be finished with th e crusher.—An explanation of the position is to be given. The District Engineer forwarded a schedule of amounts voted on tho current year’s o-dmitos ie-girding vote of amount’ provided on last year’s appropriations nut unauthorised at April 1, last; and also now money provided. The particulars were Apes road £200; corner Bush road, £100; Kenyon road, £SO; Lloyd’s road, £SO; Lower Harbour road, £200; Mount Watkins road, £100; Pigeon Flat road, £SO; and Toomoy’s road, £IOO. —Received. Tho Health Department wrote calling attention to a nuisance being caused by stagnant water lying on the roadline at Deborah Bay.—Tho matter was left in the hands of the inspector. Mr J. Adamson wrote asking that a load of gravel be put on the road leading to his property at Waitati.—Referred to the inspector. Mr W. Steedman wrote asking that the road leading to his property at Warrington be attended to.—lnspector to report. The Medical Superintendent of the Seaclilf Mental Hospital wrote asking for pipes to make a short extension bo carrystorm water. —It was resolved that the pipes to extend the culvert at Russell s road be supplied on the terms mentioned in the letter, provided tho council was not called upon to pay for the pipes until after March 31 next. GENERAL.

The tender of Mr C. Stevenson for carting metal on the Lower Harbour road, 30”tona between Port Chalmers and Grassy Point, at 4s per ton; 70 tons from Grassy Point to M‘Ha(lie's gate, at 5s per ton, and 30 tons from M‘Radio's gate to Pulling Point, at 6s per ton, was accepted. It was resolved that a notice be put on the Ballingdon crossing bridge limiting tho total weight to be carried across to one ton. Accounts amounting to £607 14s lOd were passed for payment. The Chairman returned thanks to members of the council for the support extended to hih during his term of office. He wished members a merry Christmas, and extended greetings to the staff.—Cr M'Lachlan acknowledged and reciprocated the chairman’s good wishes.
