She Is expected to return on Sunday, and will load general cargo on Monday for Lyttelton. Wellington, Napier, and Auckland. The Kaltangata was expected to leave Greymouth yesterday with a cargo of coal for discharge at Wellington. Dunedin, and Bluff. The vessel Is due here about December 21. The tanker Sliver Shell arrived at Auckland on Wednesday evening from Singapore with a cargo of bulk oil. She will pro'ceed later to southern ports to complete discharge. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Remuera left Auckland on Wednesday morning for Southampton and London, via Panama. In addition to passengers, the Remuera is carrying a large shipment of Dominion products. The Progress Is due at Dunedin on Monday from Lyttelton to load general cargo for Tlmaru, Lyttelton, New Plymouth, and Port Waikato. The Port Curtis Is to leave Auckland today for Newcastle and other Australian ports to complete loading for Port Said. The City of Lyons should arrive at Lyttelton about Sunday ,from Wellington to land cargo from New York. From Lyttelton she will proceed to Dunedin, Hobart, and Australian ports. The Port Fremantle left Auckland on Wednesday for Gisborne for further loading. 1 The City of Winchester was to leave Wei- | Kugton yesterday for Napier, to continue loading for London The lonic is due at Wellington to-morrow from Bluff. She is to go to Clarence River where she will load hardwood for Waikokopu and Auckland. ■Having completed discharge of Home cargo at New Plymouth the Matakana is to commence loading at that port for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow. She will proceed from New" Plymouth to Wanganui, Auckland, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. Advice- received by the Union Company states that the Waiiuna, with Pacific Coast cargo, left San Francisco at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday last for Auckland, Wellington, and Australian ports. She Is due at Auckland about January 5. HERTFORD LEAVES COLON. Cable advice received states that the Federal Line steamer Hertford which is en route from Liverpool to Auckland.. Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers' and New Plymouth, sailed from Colon on December 11. The Vessel is due at Auckland about January 4. GI3LA FROM MONTREAL. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the steamer Glsla arrived at Auckland on Wednesday night from Montreal. After unloading the Auckland portion of her cargo she will sail for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney to complete discharge. The Gisla is due at this port about December 24. CUMBERLAND FROM LIVERPOOL.. The Federal Line advises that the Cumberland left Auckland on Wednesday afternoon for Wellington, In continuation of her voyage from Liverpool. The vessel will subsequently proceed to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers to complete discharge. WAIKOUAITI LEAVES SYDNEY. Advice received by the Union Company states that the Waikouaiti left Sydney at 2 pm. on Wednesday for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Tlmaru with a large shipment of general cargo and timber Her freight for this port Includes transhipments ex the Comorin. After discharging 4000 tons at Auckland she will come to southern ports. MISHAP TO SAILING SHIPS. Sailing ships have been a little unfortunate. Following the accident to the E K. Sterling, homeward bound from Adelaide, tne Finnish four masted barque nougomont has been towed to Lisbon partially dismasted. She left Gefle on July 20 for Melbourne with a cargo of timber. VANCOUVER MAIL STEAMERS. The E.M.M.S. Aorangi left Sydney yesterday afternoon for Auckland with passengers, mails and cargo. She ia due at Auckland on Monday and is to continue her voyage to Suva, Honolulu, and Vancouver on Tuesday. The Niagara left Vancouver at noon on Wednesday for Honolulu, Suva and Auckland, She Is due at Auckland on Monday, January 2, and will sail for Sydney the day. MOTOR SHIP PORT FREMANTLE. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line's motor ship Port Fremantle, which is now loading in the Gisborne roadstead for London, ia one of the new motor vessels built this year. This Is her first appearance In New Zealand waters. Her length la 495 ft and her beam measurement 63ft, while her net tonnage Is 4960 and her gross measurement 8072 tons. On her recent voyage from England to Melbourne the Port Fremantle occupied only 33 days 12 hours from Dover to Port Phillip Heads. The average speed was logged at 14.61 knots. On the subsequent run from Hobart to New Plymouth the ship averaged 14.7 knots. While at New flymouth the Fort Fremantle loaded 10,000 boxes of butter, 10,000. crates of cheese, and 3000 freight carcasses of mutton. Captain D. J. Kearney, who had charge of the Port Melbourne for nine years, is in command T the Port Fremantle. Mr W. Nellson Is chief engineer. NEW ELLEEMAN LINER. The City of Worcester, a cargo steamer built and engined by Messrs Earle’s Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., Hull, to the order of the Elierman Lines, Ltd., has completed a successful trial. She is 413 ft overall length by 53ft Sin by 3Ut 4in moulded to upper deck, and carries about 8980 tons deadweight on a draught of 26ft lOin. There are two steel decks with short poop, long combined bridge and forecastle, straight stem, and cruiser stern. The propelling machinery consists of triple-expansion engines, having cylinders 23J, 40i, and 1 0 by 48in stroke. There are two boilers working at a pressure of 2201 b under Howden s forced draught, and fitted with a superheater installation of the smoke-tube type. THE CITY OF ROUBAIX. Messrs Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson, Wallsend, have just launched the single screw passenger and cargo steamer, City of Roubaix, built for the Elierman Lines, Ltd. , , , , The City of Roubaix is the second of the three high-speed cargo liners which the Ellerman Lines are building for the purpose of deciding whether reciprocating engines, turbines, or Diesel engines provide the most economical method of marine propulsion. The City of Roubaix is 455 ft in length, with a total deadweight of 10,710 tons. Up to-date cargo gear and large hatches are provided, together with special tanks for the conveyance of edible oils. The propelling machinery comprises Parsons’ impulse, re-action-type turbines arranged in three stages, and operating through single-reduction gears Steam will be supplied by four main boilers at the very high pressure of 3001 b per square inch. All the auxiliaries in the engine room are electrically driven, the motive power for the generators being provided by highspeed turbines. Both propelling machinery and boilers are being built by the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company, Ltd., Wallsend. MODERN SALVAGE PLANT. An attractive brochure in regard to the l plant of the Sydney Marine Underwriters ana Salvage Association has been issued by the committee of the association, and cannot tail to be of interest to the shipping and commercial community. The plant ia the mostup to date in the Southern Hemisphere, having a total pumping capacity of 2200 tons per hour, 1200 tons being kerosene driven. The underwriters’ wharf is situated on the north side of Gore Bay, Sydney Harbour, tnere being a depth of 14ft of water at low water spring tides, thus permitting coastal vessels or tugs to come alongside and take on board any salvage gear required, the wharf being accessible in all weathers, irrespective of the state of the tides On the wharf there are 12 anchors of various weights ranging from 12owt to 63cwt. The storage shed i« built of iron on a solid wooden frame, and is fitted with transverse and longitudinal travellers capable of lifting a weight of 2 tons each. Electric light and telephones are installed throughout. The building has a solid concrete floor with a trunk-way with rails laid for truck to transport plant from shed to end of wharf for shipment. The brochure is liberally illustrated, and clearly shows what a really fine plant the underwriters have at their disposal for salvage work. In addition to the plant at Sydney the underwriters also have a quantity of gear at coastal porta.
