SCHOOL VACATIONS

KING EDWARD TECHNICAL ' COLLEGE. ‘Pupils of the King Edward Technical College assembled in Burt Hall yesterday afternoon for the last time this year, the occasion being the annual break-up ceremonv. Parents and friends were also present. Mr T. Scott (chairman of the Board of Managers) presided. The Chairman stated that in consequence of the increased roll number of the school and the addition of a manual training centre to its daytime work, three full-time teachers had been added to the staff tills year, and overtime teaching had to be apportioned equal to the work of two more teachers. The board hoped to absorb this spare teaching time next year by appointing one or two full-time teachers in whichever department of whvk the greatest growth appeared. Thcbonrd had realised for some time the need for providing for stijl more growth in the work of both day and evening classes, and was glad to be able, for the first time - to report that definite steps had been taken. The Education Department had given authority to take under the provision of the Public Works Act an area of half an acre irt Tennyson street immediately behind the college. This proof of the department’s belie: in tile future of the college had been most •welcome. ' Fortunately the administrative space in the present buildings was capable of handling the work of a larger school, and it would be necessary to consider the addition only of classrooms and practical rooms. The board could now look forward to reasonable breathing space for- the boys of the school, and \ a'* worthy school of art on the site. v -.prefects’ badges were presented by the Rev. C. Maitland EHiss who in addressing the pupils, said that nothing was worth so much as to belong to a great school and a school with traditions. He hoped that those pupils who were leaving would not leave the atmosphere of the school behind them, and that they would carry the credit and the honour of the school to the end of their lives. Education was not a preparation for life, but education was life, and life was education. He urged the pupils to play the ghine with their country, their work, and themselves. v,Mr J. Taylor (president of the Chamber of Commerce), in presenting scholarships and bursaries, said that the worth of a nation depended upon the character of;' its people, and 10, 20, or 30 years ahead the pupils of the school would be ImWr to manage the affairs of New Zealß»d. It was, therefore, necessary for business people to take an interest in- them. He urged the pupils to keep o» trying. A business man had once sai to r him that there were only . two kinds of people—the people who tried and the people who did not try. He asked parents to’ take an interest in their children’s studies and to help them With their Josephs. . If a child had a hobby, parents should not throw cold water on it. - ! The number of children in the school hud greatly increased in the last two. voars, said the principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge). There had been 390 in 1925, 49J in 1926, and 588 ip 1927. The number . actually present on any one day ](*ul never reached this total, as 38 pupils •hgd left in the first term, 47 in the second, and 55 in the third. The'figures suggested a progressive though slight imprbvement in the chances for obtaining ehiployment during the year. _ He had been led to make a more detailed investigation into them, from which it appeared half of the pupils in their third arid fourth year had found employment, .-yd almost all had . transferred immediacy to evening classes, doing very creditably there. Of the remainder of the senior pupils the majority had not wished to,; leave. In the second year one-third of the boys left, slightly more than half of this number obtaining suitable work ami ■ appearing in evening .classes; The Education Department was strongly of opinion that one year, only of post-primary education represented effort very largely IqpL and had stated so in very strong terms in the pamphlet recently issued by it to senior pupils of primary schools.' With thi§ opinion ho heartily agreed, with the reservation that a course at a technical high school begun for a year at least anxj carried on further in evening classes represented, a training of distinct value in eases where full two years was not possible at a day school. Nevertheless the full junior course of two years in the -day was the minimum that should be attempted in any course if at all possible and in the commercial was in his opinion a necessity in all cases. The tendency noted last year of the commercial course to become unduly large in the school had persisted in spite of many attempts to persuade parents to choose another course for their sons and daughters, he said. This year 297 pupils followed it, 55 only taking the domestic, 199 engineering, and 18 the art course. H,e intended to attack the problem of this preponderance in another way. A number of pupils who could not become proficient shorthand writers or bookkeepers yet desired a commercial training and regarded it as a prime necessity for employment in shops or Warehouses, arid for such junior clerical work as they might find in other occupations. For such pupils there wpuld be set up a course known./-.gs . the general business course, which -would differ from the full commercial course Only in - eliminating shorthand for girls and mathematics for boys in simplifying the course in bookkeeping and in giving the time thus saved to instruction in general office practice and in such elementary art work as lettering, show card writing, and some simple craft. The course was not in any way inferior to the full course, but designed to meet a special need. The following items were contributed: —Pianoforte solos. Miss Edna Dry; songs. Miss Tui Northey; dances Misses Kitty and Phyllis Eckhoff, Laura Bain, and Margaret Davies. : PRIZE BIST. The following awards.were made for work done during the year:—Callander Scholarships. Tlio main ball at John M'Glashan College was idled yesterday afternoon on the occasion of tho annual distribution of prizes and the break-up ceremony. The Rev. J. Kilpatrick (chairman of the Board of Governors) presided. An attractive feature of the proceedings was a scene from “ Tho Pied Piper of Hamclin ” b v the boys of the. preparatory department, who showed considerable elocutionary skill. A number of selections from A. A. Milne’s whimisical songs ol childhood, “ When We Wore Very Young ’’ wore sung by tho school choir, and a pianoforte duet was played by S. It. Young and W. A. B. Brown. The principal speech of the afternoon was delivered b v Professor Hewitson, whose words of wisdom to the boys were richly leavened with humour and wit—the kind ct speech that boys listen to with more than passing interest. •• Don’t say don’t,” was Professor Hcwitsou’s opening injunction. ” It’s a way parents have, nndsomc teachers too. There is, for instance, the mother who told hc r little girl to ‘go and see What baby is doing and tell him not to.’

It i# a habit wo drop into very easily, and it always stirs up .in the person addressed a desire to do fust what ho is not asked to.” Ho went on to compare the teaching of to-day with what it used to be when only the three r’s were taught There were so many different things now, even apart from lessons. There were the games, the cadets, boxing, curpentery, dancing, wool classing, gardening, and so on. “Of course boxing is not considered o be a very clerical operation,” ho went on, “ but it is said of Bishop Moorhouso that ho was an expert and formidable boxer right up till ho was past middle age. tie was a strong man and ho could not have done without that strength.” Ho spouo also of the classes in musical appreciation that were becoming popular now and said that it was a very good thing for Knox College that they had these lectures. Education in singing was needed in New Zealand. “We do not sing as well as the Germans sing,” Professor Howitson said “and although I have in New Zealand, and I love Now Aus’ I doubt if wo smg as well as the Aus trlians do. lam sure wo don well as the Cornish. I remember one Christmas time going down a mine in Cornwall and the men gathered round ma y hundreds of feet underground, and sang carols, each man takmg up hls pf ? r fectlv ” Manners was another subject the speaker dealt with. It was a ant thing and ho was glad to see they were taught manners. There was an old school in the motto of ' va3 “Manners maketh man. By majors, several qualities, were . ™ an^ morals, and the right Epint and thcy me. nt a groat deal in life. After rc'atmg oTie or two experiences of his own to dlustra the meaning of manners, Professor Hewitson closed his address by paying a warm tribute to the headmaster and the stall, and thanking the friends of the school for th The S next, ’and no doubt, ih° m t ° st oortant part of the ceremony was the presentation of prizes by At the conclusion of the distribution D Riley proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker, and the school year c osed with the singing of the National Anthem. A big gathering of parents and friends of Archerfield College assembled m the St. Andrew’s Church Hall, Carroll street, last evening for the annual prize giving and ceremony of closing for the summer vacation. Hie function was a successful and enjoykble one from every point of view, and the speeches contained many references to the satisfactory year that had been brought to a close. The ceremony was opened by the girls, who assembled in the front seats of the hall and sang the college anthem, after which the annual report was read by the ex-principal. Mrs T. Nesbit. With her on the platform were the principal, Mrs G. M. Clcghorn, Dr E. N. Herrington, and Inspector Fleming, who distributed the Pr in e an address to the pupils and parents, Dr Herrington welcomed Mrs Nesbit, who. after a stay in Australia had returned to keep in personal touch with the college. He was delighted to see her that evening, in her accustomed place at the head or the college, but during her absence she had been represented by a splendid adjutant in the person of Mrs Clcghorn. in the speaker’s opinion, Mrs Cleghorn.was one of the fincs-t teachers and principals he had ever been fortunate enough to meet The report for the college year was a good one, and disclosed a range of activities among the girls that was astounding. In modern days of occasiona gloom and depression it did people good ot attend a function such as the annual closing ceremony of a school, lor the happy and optimistic atmosphere that could be sensed was communicated to all. _ . Id referrm" to tlic sttinclcird ni&iut<iiDocl by the college, Dr Herrington spoke ,of the excellent organisation and discipline that had been apparent in the college entertainment at Ills Majesty s Theatre during the year. It pointed to a hidden perfection of arrangement in all school matters. In advising the girls to continue their studies after their school lire had ended, he appealed to them to see life steadily and see it whole : to cultivate wide interests and discrimination in tastes; finally, to .seek beauty in common things and recreation in the panics ot them college days. . .
