GREATER SYDNEY.

A HUGE CITY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY. December 8. The attitude of the local governing authorities, as expressed through the columns of the press recently, indicates that they are not at all friendly disposed towards the Greater Sydney proposal, which the Government intends to introduce at a later stage as part of its big civic reform scheme. The government of Greater Sydney, which will embrace a territory covering about 1,250,000 people, will certainly not be a light task. Greater Sydney will bring within it considerably more people than those constituting the combined populations of South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania. The councils of the citv of Sydney and of the suburbs are committed to an expenditure of more than £6,000,000, or nearly three times the total expenditure of the island State, Tasmania. It is, furthermore, more than twice the expenditure of all th e Victorian municipalities, including Melbourne, and is about equal to the combined municipal expenditure of the councils of Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania These are only a few figures illustrating the vastness of a Greater Sydney. The suburban councils which, generally speaking, nnnenr to be doing their job very satisfactorily under existin'' conditions, are not at ail enamoured of the ambitious Greater Sydney idea.
