BOWLING.

By Jack.

Fine weather and keen greens were experienced for the continuation of the inter»lub championship games on Saturday. Balmacewan still retains the lead with 45 points, Dunedin being a close second with 44, and Caledonian filling third position With 40 4-5. Balmacewan met St. Kilda. each winning in two sections. Tho former was, however, rather lucky, as the aggregate points wore much in favour of St. Hilda. This only goes to show that we are still far short of finding a perfect scoring system. The first section was won by Balmacewan by 61 to 58. In the second section St. Kilda prevailed by 67 to 57, to which Stuart (St, Kilda) contributed 28 to Ferguson’s 10. This score was, however, largely offset by Lambeth’s (B) 25 to Tarablyn’s 10. The third section was won by St. Kilda by 67 to Balmacewan’s 60. Irvine (St. K.) compilng 23 to Malcolm’s 11. In the fourth section, which was won by Balmacewan by 54 to 50. Macdonald (B.) put on 22 points to Brackonridge’s 13, and Bennie (B.) 20 to Adess’s 12. Cameron was the onlv successful _St. Kilda skip in this section, his score being 25_ to Nisbet’s 12. Dunedin won five sections out of sixthree out of four against St. Clair and both sections against Port Chalmers._ The old club came within an ace o winning nil six sections, the odd section being lost by a single point: The aggregate points ■were overwhelming in favour of Dunedin. Rome heavy scoring was registered by tho Dunedin rinks. For instance. Nelson defeated Tilburn (St. C.) by 25 to 12, R. Hutchison scored 27 to Coxon’s 10, M'Fadden 88 to Longworth’s 11, Stewart 23 to Hancock’s 13, Bentlev 27 to Seddon s 35, and Rigby 21 to Fastier’s 10. The only notable score on the St. ‘Clair sine was Harraway’s 57 to M'Culloughs 10. Against Port Chalmers Best scored 29 to Booth’s 10, Pieterson 26 to Lore’s 13, and Smith 24 to Wilson’s 15. Leith kept itself well _on the bowling map by winning both sections and securing the maximum points. Against Anderson s Bav Leith had a runaway victory of 84 points to 34—Rowley 33 to Weatherburn s 6 and Wilson 33 to Walker’s 12. Against North-East Valley Leith had a winning margin of six points—67 to 61. Valievas other two sections, which met Anderson s Bay, were successful—one by 63 to 58 and the other by 77 to 52. Caledonian won three sections out ot five. Against Taieri, Caledonian won one and lost one. won both sections against West Harbour, and lost to Green Island Outram by 65 to 37, and won two out of three sections Mornington. In one of the latter Eoslyn established something approach-rig a record compiling 90 points to Mornington % 39. The uneven nature of the scoring - Sown by the following scores to Whelan’s 11. N-’cholsori 30 to Holgate s 14 and Campbell 51 to Wood s 12. All the members of the party are agreeable to playing matches in Canada on the return journey. Mr J. W. Hardley is the president of the team. The other officers will be elected when the party assembles on board the Orvieto at Sydney. Although no official advices have come to hand, it is learned from Melbourne papers that there are 1168 entries for the singles championship of Australia, compared with 767 at Sydney two years ago, and 272 at Auckland last January. However, 914 of these arc Victorians, leaving only 254 from elsewhere, whereas at Sydney two years ago, when the tournament was held in February, there were only 394 competitors from New South Wales, and 373 from elsewhere. The Australian authorities will have to consider whether it is wise to hold their carnival during the Christmas holidays, an unpopular time for visitors from other States, although admittedly very convenient for (he local people. The Sydney experience (writes ' " Trundler ” in the Auckland Star) was Very similar to that in New Zealand, where the tournament is held during an off time, usually resulting in about half ithe competitors belonging to_ the local centre, and the other half visitors. If it was held during the Christmas week, there would probably be two to three time? as many local competitors, with a considerable reduction in the number of visitors, thus destroying its Dominion character, and making it almost a local function. With 73 pt“ r cent of the competitors at Melbourne belonging to Victoria, it becomes almost a Victorian carnival, instead of an Australian.
