PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Odb Own CoaaEseoNDENT.j PALMERSTON, December 14. People motored in from all directions, even as far away as Maniototo Plains, to visit Wirth’s Circus last night. It was a perfect night, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the performance. .Miss Snell, who is leaving the local school for Oamaru South School, after four years’ service here; and Miss Webber, who is retiring from the service after teaching here for a lesser period, were entertained at a farewell tea this afternoon by the rest of the staff. Mr J. Ironside, rector, presented Miss Snell with a handsome leather handbag and Miss Webber with some Doulton ware, on behalf of the staff and pupils. The speaker eulogised the work done by the recipients; and he and the other teachers wished their guests good luck. At the same time. Miss Croxford, probationer, received a present from the staff. Palmerston retailers have decided to change their half-holiday for Christmas and New Year weeks. Wednesday, December 21, will be a half-holiday, and the late nights will be on Saturdays, December 24 and 31. Mondays and Tuesdays, December 26 and 27, and January 2 and 3, will be holidays. The following will represent Palmerston Cricket Club in a match against Dunback, at Palmerston, on Saturday:—F. Bowers, J. iliiler, E. Diack, W. M'Lcod, A. Kibblewhite, H. Bills, G. Elliott, C. Black, S. Wills, A. Henderson, and W. Earley; emergencies—A. Chisholm, F. Simpson, and D. Ireland.
